No…facing the ifs has never proved itself to be an option
In the midst of storms that pass as the days and nights go by
But then, how do we measure that which could have been
When the realities of life have demanded our place and time?
There on a garden bench where we while away the hours
The countless times that have come and gone taking our youth
Tearing at the heart with choices made so many miles apart
Face to face relating greater now the absence more than dream
Yet our voices blend still in the bitter wind and frigid storm
And words rarely fail us in that time of such incessant need

If taking the time to piece the fractured splinters would suffice
Then it would reveal what was and what was not in that while
And our eyes would betray what the heart dares not whisper
For the world spins opposite of our hidden intrinsic desires
We would sit together facing each other in that same December
Left with an emptiness that has replaced yesterdays dreams
And while I hold your hand in mine I would still know the sun
For it has shone brightly upon our faces when April arrived
We have made our sacrifices in order that we would survive
And the calendar has been crossed out throughout the years

If we had grown younger rather than older it would only prove
That the heart takes our souls by the hand forward impenitent
In the prime of life while the petals open to the blue sky above
those kisses would be foregone conclusions of our tomorrows
spilling in the exchange of breath what renews that passion
while burning in the deep recesses of our hearts and minds
we could join in that secret garden and spill our own secrets
or freeze in the reality of returning to the cold torrential rain
as the flowers and blooms wither and die on hardened soil
and we forget all that inspired us in our simple poetic lines
