My granddaughter, Rayana is learning about poetry in school and her homework was to write a Shakespearean sonnet. This is a poem that Rayana wrote which is based on a true story that happened to her very recently.

"Pool Rules" by Rayana

There was an old grumpy guy at the pool

Who scolded me for bringing in my inflatable toy

And the noodles and boogie board that brings me such joy

Because he says it is against the rule.

I was surprised by what he said and I thought, "how can that be?"

I go to this pool all the time to have fun with my friends

And always see other kids playing with latest pool toy trends

So I think that mean old man is just lying to me.

Then I look at the sign and it is pool rule number three

The rule says "No floaties, boards, toys or rings allowed in the pool,"

But who would ever decide to write such a rule?

I should stand up for all the kids and say "We disagree!"

To show respect, my friends and I leave our toys along the wall,

But as soon as the old man leaves the pool, we grab our toys, dive in and have a ball!

So cute and well written. But I'm of the old-school. When I was young, I took nothing in the pool with me but my skinny body and my little Speedo trunks. Floaties were for sissies because I really wanted to learn how to swim and not ride around on a float all day.

Your write brings back so many memories of fun days at the pool where we had the same rule, waited until the grouchy woman left and then we did the same thing... made a dive for the floats and toys. If she stayed... we had to amuse ourselves with the Marco Polo game and splashing water at our friends. Thanks for bringing me back in time with your clever words.

She definately has the poet's gift as well as a strong sense of right and wrong and moral injustice. I have seen signs like this posted at pools and although they may be for a good reason...the reasons should be explained to the children.
