Inwardly Screaming "I'm Alive!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Buried Alive
By La Belle Rouge
In The Days Before Embalming
They think she can’t hear them
but still being alive and soon to be buried,
she listens intently to each conversation
taking place above her coffin.
Comments dripping with hypocrisy or hate.
She feels each knife of disdain
deep in a heart that is beating
too faintly for the doctor to find.
She strains to lift a finger
or flutter a sewn eyelid in panic
for she is as good as dead
and soon to be buried alive,
deep, beneath six feet of immovable earth.
With mammoth effort she tries in vain
to pry her dry tongue from the roof of her mouth
and with it’s tip she can feel the thread
that holds her silenced lips together.
Her vocal cords are paralyzed
and though she prays to be able
to rouse them....just enough
to make a moan loud enough to he heard
over the dreary dirges of the organ
not a sound will they make.
Her heart is bursting with raw fear
as she hears the coffin lid closed softly
and feels herself lifted, onto the shoulders
of those men who will unwittingly
carry her to her horrific fate.
The cleric’s prayers sound muffled
through the walls of her pine prison
soon to be buried and forgotten
too young, too soon, too tragic
to end this way, fighting for breath.
Not even able to claw at the coffin
as the clods of red clay fall rhythmically
down, down to cover her and steal her life.
Inwardly she screams, I'm alive, I'm alive!
The clods cover her at last,
she is buried, but not alive
her heart has exploded with fear
I recall this happened over the years in some countries-even in Ireland once I read where a wife was buried 5 times and she revived(they felt she was dead as she didn't seem to be breathing)-the 6th time she did this tho..here is the weird part--her husband had her coffin nailed shut!!-Guess he had other plans??-well done and just in time for Hallloween
Masterful! This is the stuff of nightmares! At least you saved her from a fate far worse than death!
Oh my La Belle, this is truely a horror to even think about. A tale spun very well with an eerie sense to it, did enjoy though....
Be safe,
Sheesh, Belle. This was creepy enough without the music added. Are you trying to scare us to death (-;
Great write though. I'm a litle scared I might have nightmares tonight though...
This is the reason wakes were held back then and now. Someone stayed with the deceased for 24 hours before interment to lessen the possibility of the interment of someone still alive.
This is haunting and, yes, scary Sissy. Wonderfully penned.
Blimey, Belle. This makes my stomach churn. After spending time at the undertakers when my Mum died last year, I find this particularly penetrating. Not beyond belief, either. You have depicted this with seemingly awesome accuracy, both in terms of the procedures undertaken and the experiences of the one suffering... You ain't a secret Goth are you?! P'raps it's time to come out the... coffin... :)) Bless you Darlin. Stay safe and well while I'm gone. Love, Kate xx
Certainly captures the inner fear that most of us have of this type of tragic ending. Having had several near death experience in my past I can sure feel this one.
Belle,
This is one of your best!
I love how you flesh out your story, telling us much about the poor stiff in addition to her growing terror
Labelle, you just freaked Karla out; she's extremely claustrophobic (and part of it's my fault; I used to lock her up in the closet, just so I could watch her wig; not nice, I know, but I still did it!). I am claustrophobic too, to a degree, but nothing, NOTHING like Karla! You capture the feeling of claustrophobia well in this one; brrrr! Very well done; brava! (Don't GET me in no coffin; I'll be FIGHTIN' my way out!! LOL)
(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( *gasp*
Oh Belle,
My, what a frightful poem..Very well written, I almost could feel being trapped in that coffin...I am a bit claustrophobic myself, and I would probably just die of fright from being inside something like a coffin.
You are amazing..Missing you, dear friend.
Peace, light, and love,
