Out of the Commonwealth of Virginia comes this strange yet beautiful tale of folklore about two lovers.

A sad tale out of Virginia
Of two lovers about to be wed
How was the groom ever to know
His soon to be bride would end up dead

But that's exactly what happened
She fell ill and then she was gone
The groom was left broken hearted
His future shattered he was forlorn

Day after day, night after night
He'd cry and cry for his lost love
He wouldn't accept the cruel fact
So he prayed to Heaven above

That they could be re-united
That she had never gone away
So much obsessed he had become
He simply lost his mind one day

They'd buried her near Dismal Swamp
A few short days after she'd died
His mind gone, he couldn't think straight
He thought her family had lied

He thought that they'd sent her away
Out in the swamp by Drummond's Pond
So he would come to her rescue
This thought allowed him to move on

So into the swamp he stumbled
In search of his beautiful bride
When on the surface of the pond
Came the blinking of a firefly

"My love!" he cried, "I see your light
I'll reach you no matter the cost"
Quickly he built a raft of logs
To sail out to the girl he'd lost

But when he had almost reached her
A sudden wind blew from the sky
Creating waves that tipped his craft
He fell in the pond with a cry

Yes, the groom drowned that very night
In its murky waters he died
But alas, as the story goes
He's re-united with his bride

So, if you go to Dismal Swamp
You may see this man with his love
Never can true love be denied
It's God's greatest gift from above

A sad and yet lovely tale as well. Thank you for sharing it, Paul. Love and peace,

I like this poem Paul. It makes one think. No doubt both lovers were ready to met their maker. To them death is eternal light in a blink!

Amen!

Of very likely tale–oft repeated. To see their shapes in the morning mist would be both a delight and fear that they were ghosts coming back to haunt, and not lovers out for a morning stroll.

"It's God's greatest gift from above", yes! indeed it is, Paul! Sad, but beautiful is this poem!

Dismal Swamp, if I am not mistaken, is part of the Intercoastal waterway and I travelled through it on my way to Florida in a boat one year a ways back...neat story, glad I didn't know of it then or I would have gone out and on the ocean to miss that section of the ICW...e
