A Fool Such As I

A FOOL SUCH AS I

I never thought you’d make me cry

Never thought you’d gut me this way

A fool such as I

I once knew better

I built a wall , a fortress no one could conquer

I knew what it was to be hurt and wasn’t revisiting that place again

You came calling

Weakened me with words I wanted to hear

A smile that seized my heart

Laughter that wrapped around my soul

Slowly, a brick unwedged

They all fell down

One by one, then faster, faster, as you stayed.

I fell down

Fell right on my sword

Dropped it and left myself vulnerable

Wide open for you

A fool such as I

Should have known better

Thought I’d learned my lesson before

There’s always one who loves and one who is loved

Swore I’d never again be the one to give it all away and get nothing in return

A fool such as I

Did what I knew better than to do

Allowed myself to believe in you

Believe you wanted me too

Believed I was good enough for you

The bricks all fell down

My wall crumbled and you walked right in

Reached right inside…

Took what was left of my heart and left my guts on the floor

Over before it began

Didn’t even have a chance

Just the promise of happiness out of reach

Promised to me but I never got to touch

A fool such as I

I should have known better than to believe

A fool such as I

Really should know better

Yet I still wait for you

Still hope for… you.

The brick walls always crumble, at the thought of love.

feel the pain, anger, confusion brought out in these lines...some of I think are just doomed to this fate..hopefully temporary, and not a lasting condition. Nicely done.

Few of us get through this world unscathed by love's keen edged blade but if we discount the pain of the bad loves...how will we ever taste the sweetness of a good one.

Blimey, how magical it is to see/hear/feel you writing once more.

Hate to say, not Crystal on her top form, but still a great poem, it is more song like than poetry. no-matter just fab to see your crazy name writing once more.

Tops, doubt if it's autobio, no bloke is that daft.

Christine... I actually wrote this after listening to 30 Seconds To Mars's "Was It Just A Dream" and it goes perfectly with the melody. I kind of did write it as a song and when I read it, I hear it that way. Wish I could sing. I'd record it.

The theme that you express via your verses here is sadly a timeless and universal one in this world/life, Rain. This meaningful metaphorical offering from you reaches deeply into my soul and your words echo there because I am very familiar with what they express. Thank you. Love, peace, and hugs to you,

Regis (Reegie, to you)

PS: Oh, and I have been a fool too.

"Like a moth to a flame" as madonna sang. This is a beautiful poem. But don't beat yourself up for falling again. Sometimes we need to learn a lesson more than once, in order to fully get it.

I did the same thing. . .more than twice
And am happy to be now stepping around the thin ice.

You will too.
