For the soldier, does the War ever end? |
|
|
A man stood on the bridge looking at the river.
With sad hollow eyes, his body gave a shiver.
Fireworks reflecting on the water so serene.
White, red, yellow, light blue, and green.
Memories haunting from very long ago,
Remembering war’s horrific light show.
In a plane flying over the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
It was do or die, with never a thought to fail.
Tracer rounds every where were seen.
White, red, yellow, light blue, and green.
G. I. Fly Boy stood on the balcony gazing at the river Mekong.
Watching paper lotus blossom flowers with candles float along.
White, red, yellow, light blue and green.
Twinkling lights every where were seen.
Dreaming tranquil thoughts, of peace and going home.
The festival was soon over, more missions to be flown.
Reality kicked back in at the sound of the bombs, nullifying it all.
He returned safely, unlike 58,000 Brother’s names upon the Wall.
A man stood on the bridge, feeling quite alone.
Placed my hand upon his shoulder and whispered,
"Soldier, Welcome Home"

My father lived through WWII and fought with the Resistance in France. From what little he told me of it, I don't think the "war" within ever ends. Thank you, Kathy. Love and blessings to you,

| Awesome. You have really illuminated that war for me as some others have on this web site. It was a nightmare just watching it on the news. But you lived it and I hope you have found peace since then. I appreciate your service to this country and for me. Welcome home. Liz |
