Over the last few months, I’ve posted a number of poems from my soon to be released book, titled “WANDERIN & WONDERIN.” It’s a poetically told story about a card playin, pool shootin, gambling singer-song-writer who follows the sun on his classic Harley Davidson, often sleeping under the stars. This poem, which comes from the final chapter, was written on behalf of the main character in that story. It’s strictly fiction.

WANDERING MAN
SLOWIN DOWN

It might a been a deck a cards,
er maybe we’d roll the bones.
Besides my pride & honor
my hog’s bout all this wanderin man owns.

Sometimes, I’d do the hustlin
an there’s times I was the one got hustled
but I bin down this road afore
no sense gettin my feathers ruffled.

I had my favorite hangouts
where I could generly find a game.
Soon as you’d walk through the door
they knew Wanderin Man’s my name.

Each evenin’s conversatin
centered on the journey.
That will likely be the way of things
til they load my ass on a gurney.

But afore that day comes
I've a few more miles to cover.
Lessons to teach an learn,
bout gittin along with one another.

My wanderin days ain’t over,
but there drawin mighty short,
I still do a little gamblin,
it’s still my favorite sport.

Wanderin’s bin in my blood
since I was no mor’n a pup,
my final days are a comin
but I’ll be damn if I’m a givin up.

I kin still handle a cue
though it’s really not the same.
My eyesight has gone bad
an it’s really slowed my game.

I’ve never made it big,
but I’ve managed to get by
an I’ve set aside a nest egg
to help feed me till I die.

I’ve had a purtty good run,
met lots of interestin fellers,
been to lots a exotic places,
heard some damn good story tellers.

An when they call my number,
of one thing ya’ll kin be certain,
I’ll have had one hell of a ride,
afore they pull my final curtain.

I love to wonder!!! I love traveling and seeing everything and trying new things! It amazes me that we have so much change in these days and times! I will always keep a truckin too my friend till The great man upstairs takes me home, only there won't be a final curtain, it will be the opening act of what is yet to come! Love reading your work today!

Have a great day Richard!

Although I'll never get on a motorcycle again, I've been on that hog and I've been riding along with you all along to the end of the road or the book, whichever comes first.

These verses I find expansively satisfying. What makes them that for me is the 'casual elegance' of such blatant honesty in the character's voice. It grits with a naked kind of appreciation. Lyrical, balladish, chaps-smacking-fun honesty comes off these lines from this character's telling of his tale. Thanks for the journey ~~ Diana

And the ride is what's important, Wandering Man . . .
