Wonder

Since getting a dose of herbicide during the
drought last year, and a thorough mowing
and edging along my fence a month ago,
the hundred foot wide powerline right-of-way
behind my house has rebounded from new
rains, with corn-like grass with lots of seeds
towering over my six-foot cedar fence. I wish
they would never cut the right-of-way or defoliate
it so that the wild things could grow undisturbed.

 Wonder

Have you ever wondered beyond your space,
and sought out new desires?
Have you ever watched a weed field grow,
and seen its cathedral spires?

Where all things live in harmony,
and carry out their own special lives.
Where creatures both large and small,
flourish and great diversely thrives.

Where every drop of rain that falls,
and every ray of sunshine,
is captured in its stately structure,
for just the right amount of time.

For the cycle of life continues,
from seed to seedling to plant to harvest.
From birth to mate, to nurture, to great,
the process creates the very best.

Have you seen more perfect creatures,
than the butterfly, or the bird?
Or herbivores grazing, both alone,
and in great, magnificent herd.

The cathedral weathers the seasons,
whether hot or cold, wet or dry,
and continues on changing forever,
its view with the changing sky.

There is no garden or zoo to compare,
or neatly planted monoculture crop.
In diversity and sustainability,
with productivity over the top!

Regardless of season, beauty abounds,
from the color of spring, to winter's white.
Nature's beauty is a wonder to behold,
from dew's early morn, to a crickets’ night.

So if you ever wonder out of the mold,
and find a small patch of weeds to unfold,
think of the world as that small patch,
and let it grow on and grow to old.

The future of the planet will thank you,
for your wisdom, my friend.
And may your curious wondering,
be nurtured and sustained, to never end.

Ron, this is astonishingly beautiful writing from your hand. What a tribute to everything balanced in this life and world. This has such tenderness and respect and a weave that is enchanting. The voice in this poem is deep, seasoned and calm. "Where all things live in harmony/and carry out their own special lives." This poem is flawless in my eyes and symphonic in my ears, its message being the most important thing on earth. Thank you, Ron. ~~ Diana

Your thoughts flow here, Ron, in your special way of expressing. we get the same kind of growth from the bird seed we use in our back yard. Proliferates quite irksomely. Keeps my honey-do list always wordy. Enjoyed ... richard

Some weeds are prettier that plants,
and some plants are prettier that weeds
...who should decide what grows...
but embrace the wonderment of both!!!!

"Where the wild things are" - nothing should be disturbed. I put no herbicides or pesticides on my lawn, I nurture what is around me to the dismay of my neighbors, yet all wildlife is found in my back yard. Eating what naturally grows and un-poisoned. All I do is mow it down to a reasonable height otherwise my yard is a jungle lol. I have beautiful thistle plants with their lovely bulbs, fields of yellow dandelions that are beautiful in bloom all food for nature. Butter like lettuce leaves of the so-called weeds that the bunnies feast on. I only care to preserve what should be naturally taken care of. My yard (1/3 acre) never looks bad. :)

Lovely write and much for others to ponder

Ron - I'll hold the intention that the corn grows high so your view will be of only sky. 'Wonder' works metaphorically; 'wander' works literally. Nice write!

Nice one Ron. It gives me lots to wonder about during my wandering. Which prompts me to ask you, if you meant wonder or wander? I've read it both ways and both times you used it, I seem to want to read it as wander. Just a thought. Dick

Beautifully rendered. The weed, like so much of our maligned humanity, suffers indignant scorn, when all it wants is to live. For some reason, we, as this super sentient species, find such longings in all of nature, replaceable. I think not.

Who says the pen is mightier than the sword?
In the hands of a master it is a work of art
It is the sum of thinking, and feeling, and being.
It is a journey with no end
It is music that repeats, but not quite
It is us at our best
And it's so nice to be reminded
by someone who always gets it right.

Nice work here, Ron. Nature's balance is,no doubt just about as perfect a situation that it is possible to have. Yes, man trespasses and upset that balance probably far more than we should, but nature's weeds etc., you will find growing through solid concrete. Durable. Tough. Hard to destroy completely.
