safe and sound
© 1997 by Gracie C. McKeever
blood on the concrete
reaching to the
front door
outside
an ambulance sits at the
sidewalk
vigilant as the building
occupants
remember first moving
in
more than a decade
ago when crack was
the craze and
the next apartment
was its outlet where
customers queued up as
lemmings
an old lady mistook it for
a g'ment cheese line
was so long
before the
crackdown (no pun intended)
reigned
in the madness
disappointed the
Living Dead
had to find another
backyard to lay
their lines and pipes
before you felt
....see
title...

Very realistic context with a particular, personal form.
Interesting twist.
I have appreciated the comparison of queuing people with lemmings.
