Written on a solo visit to the California coast.

Shore birds, stilt-like
Skitter, scatter
Leaving me to my sandy solitude.
They circle and land
Cleverly
Always behind me
Covering damp sand with rapid, tiny birdtracks.

I am smiling–
(Their determined dance against the tide
Always makes me smile).
Aloneness is not the same as lonliness.

It’s only later I continue down the beach to find
Broken shells, Sargasso weed, and then
A fallen duck; a seaweed noose
About his neck.

A lovely poem with happy scenes; I wouldn't mind being there....but then there's the sad ending. Like life, there's a mixture of hapiness and sadness every day. Savor the happy scenes, and continue to share them all.
