A Turkey That I Knew

A children's poem for Thanksgiving.

A perfect turkey is a welcome holiday guest.
Everyone knows a fresh one is best.
Only on the farm do live turkeys roam.
I drove over that way to bring one home.

All white and noisy, a great milling herd,
How can I chose just one succulent bird?
Gobbling and strutting in their turkey way,
Unaware that it could be their last day.

The farmer said to pick any fat fowl.
I could even take it with me right now.
Their ugly heads bobbled. Black eyes shifted.
How could I pick one to have beheaded?

I could not cook a turkey that I knew.
The grocer still offered a frozen few.
Thawed, stuffed, cooked for a holiday feast day.
Out on the farm, one old tom could still play.

Oh this really rings true. Once you met them, how can you do the deed :)
We had a Rooster in our Coup on our small farm when I was a girl. My Sister called him Cheeky Charlie, and together we would feed him grass and play with him.
One day he disappeared while we were at school, and when next our Mother roasted a chicken or so she said,( huh it was Charlie ) we boycotted her bigtime, and insisted on having an egg instead!!!
Thanks for this, a true delight.
:) Ch'erie
