Deadlines drive me, most of my own creation. When none sets my daily pace, time hangs heavy and wishing it otherwise only adds to its weight. So write a poem!

               Suddenly It’s Quiet

Quiet descends like a time bomb, ticking slowly
I don’t just wait for the explosion, I dread it.
Too much time, uncounted time. does its damage inside.
My day has a routine. Time should know that and have
The decency to be modest and undemanding, know when to wait.
I do need it for tasks, sorting events, sifting through thoughts.
Then it’s the gas in my tank, propulsion, the daily fix.
But today is space between what’s done and what’s next to come.
The sun breaks over the hills, spreading light across a lake.
I should welcome such a balm, a gift: time caged for now.
But my question called across the water, What? What?,
Hears in reply only an insistent echo: Do! Do!
Somewhere between the fear of sloth and the call of duty
There must a place where quiet is benign and is more than
The absence of time, a place where serenity breathes its gentle breath.
Someday I may learn how to inhale that peace, no longer
Panting every hour after the demands of detonating time.
But not yet today. What? What? Do. Do. Now! Now!

i relate to this so well....'somewhere between the fear of sloth and the call of duty there must be a place'.... where quiet is more than just the absence of time. these are core words to me and you've expressed this dilema in a most poetic way.

my family will love and appreciate this piece. the day will come when my body betrays me and i'll welcome 'serenity breathing its gentle breath on me' and i'll relish 'inhaling that peace'....BUT its not now...

maybe after the last oiling of the deck, taking that last sail, planting the last herb garden, doing the last pottery design and mucking out that last stall on and on...

they forget that i'm promised beauty peace and serenity for eternity AFTER

I'm lost, how and why would anyone want to sit still? When it gets quiet around here something is very wrong, love your prospective...

Be always safe,

This sounds familiar to me, it's the perfect description of someone very close to me. He has the hardest time sitting still and doing nothing. Bigtime hardcore workoholic, that's what he is. Well written.
