Many of the same characters as appear in "An Unlikely Journey," but the scene is the violent nation of Colombia shortly after the devastating earthquake of January 1999..

MAYAN

I have long been fascinated by the Mayan culture and I wrote a poem about their history, in particular the history of their hieroglyphics. This poem documents the discovery of the key to their language.

MAYAN

By A. Leigh Stewart

Their texts long count from creation

3114 B.C. was born their nation

Hieroglyphs tell the stories

of a civilization’s former glories

The Maya used the rising of Venus

to plot wars most heinous

they predicted eclipses

with very few misses

They write to great heights

top to bottom and left to right

with eighty signs

not so barbarous ancient times

Russian isolation gave insight

into the meaning of their plight

Respecting the spirit of the mountain

delivered them a vestial fountain

Hanab Pakal Palenque Lord of Shield

a dynasty of King’s revealed

the lowland south collapsed in war

The dragon power soared

The artistry was dead

so another culture marched ahead
