I'LL WRITE YOU A POEM
I will write you a poem
my love,
A poem of your beauty to tell
The beauty of your black skin to spell
I will write a poem
for each strand of your hairs
Shy green hairs in harmattan's whirling wind
Those hairs that beautify your black skin
I will write a poem
of praise to each colour on your blouse
That green which connotes fertility
and the white which depicts your purity
I will write a poem
in honour of those designs on your skirt
That eagle, those horses and the black shield
That branch on the shield that has our thirst filled
I will write you a poem
I shall sing you a song;but when?
since my sobs and tears fluctuate its flow
These tears, will they ever go?
I will write you a poem
but this is not yet my poem
for these tears still blur my vision
These same tears that eclipse my mission
I will write you a poem
An apology for my promises
at your younger years
Those years of your sweat
the sweat of your toil
the toil of your might
the might of your sons
the sons of your womb
When my tesr-blurred eyes are clear again
I shall sing you my song, and then;
My love, Nigeria
I will write you my poem
