I found a knife in a kitchen drawer the other day. It was one that my mother used to feed the family. It made me think of her, and think of what food means.

In every humble home, in kitchen, cupboard, drawer you'll find,

A worn down knife, a rusty whisk or "Pyrex" lemon squeezer,

Handed down some unseen family line to,

First, home-leaving daughter by ancient bird or geezer,

A bowl, maybe, that's passed through hands you've never known,

And those same hands have held you tight,

Mother, or grandmother, great or great-great,

That grated, chopped and mashed, and fried and boiled,

Your food, a solid love, to keep you fed,

And now they're dead.

But with you still,

Not ostentatious like an heirloom long-case clock,

Nor obvious like a watch or ring or,

Hackneyed like a silver spoon,

No paintings in your face, in gilded frames,

Just things, utensils not diamond rings,

Lying there, waiting for the time,

You'll think "I've one of those, somewhere" and hunt through drawers,

to find, that thing she bought in 1927 for her Christmas,

to use that day and never once again.

Great theme!

"That thing... and never once again." You just created a kind of "Gift of the Magi" in my head... a side-story in those two lines... for the reader to get lost in.

That was a neat trick and a good way to end a poem.
