“ON THE ROAD TO VEGAS”
Winter’s mor’n half over,
I’d say it’s been a success.
I managed to rebuild my bankroll,
so I packed an headed west.
I’ m makin my way to Vegas
been on the road fer weeks
I’m still lookin fer that contentment
every wanderin man seeks.
I’m plannin to play in a tournament,
the entry’s a thousand bucks,
if’n I kin wind up an win it
it’ll take a lot of luck.
First place pays a hundred grand,
twentieth gits me my money back
I’m a hopin my exceptional luck
will make up fer the skills I lack.
Tain’t so much about the money
though a hundred grand’s a lot a smack,
but the winner an 2nd place
get a ticket on the fast track.
A seat in the World Series,
worth a cool ten grand
so if I finish 2nd or better,
we’ll be a strikin up the band.
The big game is the Series,
its where we all are aimin.
Jist to make the final table
my nerves would need some tamin’.
I’ve been broke afore
often down to the felt,
but losin in some back alley
kin offen end up in welts.
When you’re in the Series,
it’s a more sophisticated game,
ya might see a guy bummed out,
but he knows that he’s to blame.
My rep is that I don’t bluff,
but occasionally I throw em a curve.
Skill might be overrated,
it’s prob’ly more bout yer nerve.
You need some readin skills
an I’m not talkin pages in a book.
You have to learn to read PEOPLE
an it’s about more’n how they look.
I’ve got the thousand dollar entry
I’m clean and freshly shaved
I’ve sharpened up my skills
my road to the final table has bin paved.
Now I’ve only got to play the cards,
but the early rounds really scare me
It takes time to figure em out
but there’s always some who’ll dare me.
Ya run into all kinds
when yer a sittin at the table.
Some are purtty damn good
though some are not so able.
Since Moneymaker out played the odds
eight er nine years ago
the tables have unknown faces
of players ya never git to know.
They have unusual styles of play
learned playin online poker,
sometimes the way they play,
you’d think the deck still had a joker.
But, the cart’s afore the horse,
first I gotta git in the game.
Since I don’t have the ten grand entry,
there’s still them nerves a needin tamed.
