My father is dying. He is not going "gently into that good night." (Dylan Thomas). I like Leif Enger's description, "He died as if he was catching a train." Would that it could be so.

Did it open quietly in the night so that the soul slipped easily away,

Moving on towards the white light without fear or doubt?

Did the door open full and wide with a vacuum-pulling roar,

Sucking the unwilling into its vortex, the victim holding on to life,

No match for death’s firm grip?

Did the door creak and warn, so that humans oiled the works,

And the warning signs were no longer heard?

Death arrived anyway in his own good time.

Did Death open the door an inch to be rudely rebuked

With a slam, so that when Death returned,

He returned with a cruelty of diminishment, taking

Pride and dignity before taking the life?

Death’s door. It is mankind’s fate to walk through it,

Alone, naked as the day we were born. Each of us will enter.

Some will embrace death. Some will fight, battle, and rage.

Death does not care, not a fig, about attitude.

He will win in the end.

So it is written. So it goes.

Que sera, sera...nicely done. I love the line about attitude. So true.

Oh, I'm so sorry Eileen!
Your poetry is compelling, the subject matter bravely explored.

Sadly, I have just gone through it with my own brave father. His memorial service was this past weekend. I hope you find peace and comfort, and lean on that upliftingly humorous poetic husband of yours.
Blessings and strength,
Christine

We are born to die. Don't much like the way it is set up, but what the heck. A lot of us don't have a choice when death comes a-calling. Would that it be a fast track into death rather than what your father is going through. We don't always have a choice. I hope I will have that choice, I have a plan. I feel for you in this time of your sorry, Eileen.

A poignant account of your father's struggle with death. You are so right. We cannot choose which way we go.

No he is not. He will remain the Major until his last breath. But this is the one time he cannot pull rank and I foresee a pile of figs. p

For those of us still on this side of death’s door, quite often much is made of those last few steps. I believe we should pay much more attention to all the steps leading up to those last few.

Our time will come, in the meantime, watch your step.

My thoughts are with you. Dick

I am so sorry. Know you are in my prayers and thoughts during this season of life. I know how it is. I lost my big, strong Daddy nearly four years ago, and I did not get to say goodbye to him or get to go to his funeral.

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Texas, Karen Lynn. :(

Better NOT to go silently into that good night...better to fly into death in a rush saying "Wow, what a trip, wish I could do it all over again..."! Hope YOU stay strong through this time, Eileen...e

Very prophetic my friend and those of us who have been at that door with perhaps even a foot inside know that it is all relevent to how we live the time we are given. Well done.
