In memory of Old Don Dern, Butcher/Philosopher

Never Say Good-Bye

We traveled across the mountains
To tell Pop good-bye
He had been in such terrible pain
We know it was time for him to go
We walked into his hospital room
Where he lay on his deathbed
Agony welded into his features

Through the pain he said
Don’t cry for me
I’ve had a good life
And now more than enough pain
We visited for a spell
Then a look of Peace came over him
He said, “Never say good-bye
Say farewell”

Years later when reminiscing
With Gran about his life
We told her of our final visit
She was shocked
Said, “No, that can’t be
I was with him the whole time
He was in the hospital
And I didn’t want you
To see him like that
But to remember him
As he was in better days”

We exchanged glances
Without saying a word
For we both had been there
Somehow in Spirit
It was very, very real
To the two of us

Deeply touching and wonderfully penned Duke.

Very personally and surreal. I was fortunate to see my father one time, in the hospital, before he died, still in the hospital, four months later. At the time I was there he couldn't talk, but he recognized everyone was and smiled once in a while through his pain.

very real in spirit indeed; i like how you
present this, Duke, and what it says to me;
like in particular the use of 'welded' even
if the context is painful for both sufferer and observer;

well delivered.

Maybe it's just I don't know your kind of poetry Duke. But I don't understand poetry that has no rhyme.
Perhaps you can set me straight on that. Or not!

Eternal Duke. May your days be filled with such tree lore of remembering familial kindred spirits. Please keep me close in your thoughts, I, scrolled in the bark of time.

We, you and I bonded in friendship,
Sage
