While doing the budget for my vice president of administration at a Texas State University, I asked my boss why he didn't increase the salaries of the custodians because they were below the poverty line. He replied, “I can't do that, they wouldn't know what to do with the money. It would upset everything.” And then he went ahead and generously padded his salary every year that he remained until he was caught pinching the piggy bank and ousted (he kept most of his salary and all of his retirement).
Just last week, janitors in Houston, one of the richest cities–thanks to big oil–in this recession poor country, were in the streets, demanding higher salaries and better treatment.
Still kicking the can down the road…

| The problem with kicking the can down the road the way the government does, is that as the years go by it grows into a 16 trillion dollar can and one day turns around and starts kicking our cans back up the road. |
