This is a real and moving story of love and lost to a terrible fate, of suicide. One day she is suddenly in the middle of its horror; as if being caught up in a tornado'..

Mary Oliver, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winning poet, presents her poetry at Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, Santa Rosa, CA, 14Oct2011.

She eases herself across this public stage.

A private nature walk begins -

sensible shoes, earth-friendly clothing,

white hair free to the air, clear eyes - scanning.

Cradled near her heart - a precious bouquet

of solitary musings on the soft, rough truths of  nature:

leaf after leaf - succinct images of  elusive essence

to fill our senses.

A simple love begins our engagement with mystery,

gratitude, sorrow, gentle humor, unfathomed worth;

captivates us an hour in her telling of

Blackwater Pond devotion.

Circling back to deepest joy -

a reminiscence of beloved Percy -

inviting love, giving love;

we know the journey is complete.

Kindly, she says:

“I have read my poems,

I have answered your questions,

I’m leaving now.”

Accepted into her arms, our floral bouquet -

speckled with tears of delight.  She floats gentle kisses

into lush air to join perfect petals of verse

sprinkled at our feet.
