A poem written in memory of my former boss's husband, Reverend James Turner.

A cowboy rides in Heaven
Roped by Our Father’s hand
To dwell amid the angels
Within the Promised Land
His hat is now a halo
His boots now touch the clouds
His wit and friendly musings
Now charm angelic crowds

He basks amid the sunlight
Fading into the West
His spirit lies within us –
The lives on earth he blessed
We’ll hold each gentle memory
In our hearts, evermore
Until our Texas cowboy
Greets us at Heaven’s Door

A cowboy rides with Jesus
Our Father called him Home
To rest within His Kingdom –
A wondrous place to roam
We will always remember
With the highest of acclaim
The strength, love and compassion
Of God’s angel, Cowboy James

Jill, although death can be a sad thing, you have made it pointly okay to be dead in this poem. If that makes any sense. I am sure those who loved Cowboy James were not comforted so easily, but I find the thought of this journey told in such a positive and rythmic way very heartening. This was a treat to read. Be well, Kathy

I know why you write so well. You're a southern Ohio hillbilly, and they are brilliant when given half a chance. Your words are heartfelt and comforting. Thanks.

Good to see you back writing poetry, even if it is a somber send off of one of Texas's own. I've been going to too many funerals lately. One was an officemate and Reverad who became a bishop recently before he died–left quite a legacy.

Written in the true American tradition. Although a eulogy, this made me smile and I'm sure Minister Turner had a rollicking good laugh of appreciation too. Great flow adds to the humor and spirit of this one.
