Mind’s Eye
Karen Hecht Springer
Sweet nothings
Caress my ear
And just as sharply
The moment ends
As he ignores
The petals of the flower
Opening within my being
Instead choosing
Water over blood
I step away from myself
And in the silver screen of my mind’s eye
You’re throwing back a laugh
A mischievous glint in your eye
Suddenly
I want to go to the hills in the distance
Even though I know when we get there they’ll just be
Covered with the same old grass
Yet somehow transformed
Into green lush pastures of promise
Suddenly
I want to go to the clouds above
Even though I know when we get there they’ll just be
Thin white vapors whispering the truth
Yet somehow capturing
The fleeting weight of regret
But I’ve flown too close to the sun
Icarus falling, drowning to blue sea
And I realize
One heart,
Two lives
Equals none
