“From time to time,

People tell me to lighten up,

‘It’s just a dog.’

If you, too, think it's 'Just a dog,’

 You probably use phrases like:

Just a friend’ or ‘Just a sunrise’

Or ‘Just a promise.’”

I was sent a saddening e-mail

About a dog chained in a yard

‘No Food, No Love, No Hope’

For this dog, life was too hard

I went to the address given to me

His plight soon brought me to tears

Concerned neighbors informed me

He’d been chained out here, for years

In summer’s heat, this dog lacked enough fresh water

In winter’s cold, he was without any shelter of his own

To myself and others, this canine deserved far better

And we now pledged to find him a much better home

We soon enlisted the help of a law enforcement officer

Who tried to convince his owner that this wasn’t right

So this human pretended to show a little compassion

He took the dog inside, until the officer left that night

By the very next morning, this canine was chained again

So, several people now began complaining to the police

His owner eventually tired of all the fuss over ‘just a dog’

And he eventually changed his mind, and signed a release

This neglected dog has been taken to an animal hospital

Where he is being treated for malnutrition and parasites

Now, everyone involved in this rescue, is finally satisfied

To all of us, he is not ‘just a dog’ - to us, he, too, has rights

If Mankind’s Devoted Best Friend,

Is Far More Than ‘Just a Dog’ To You,

Please Report All Abuse That You Encounter,

Until All of This Man-Made Abuse is Through.

And Please Help Us Spread The Word,

That October is ‘Adopt A Dog Month;’

So Many of Them Need a New Friend,

Please Help Us To Save The Life of One.

thank you thankyou ed for this sad reminder. there is no allegiance or complete unconditional love like you receive from one of these cast-offs. they positively KNOW that it was you and only you that came to save them.

it's never 'Just a Dog'

that's our first error, first of many

you, Ed, never know when to quit
and you'll have to be on the permanent horizontal
before you do...always the noble man, bless you!

Ed, your compassion is remarkable. We have two adopted mixed dogs and a pug. This world is a dreary place for some of God's creatures, human and canine, and whatever we can do for the least of these, that we do for Him. Bless you. I enjoyed the poem. Be well, Kathy

it is horrible how some nondeserving people treat our best friends..they should have done to them what they prevert on our friends

You are making a very good point about how we treat each other based on our treatment of dogs.

Thanks to you, this poorly neglected dog is saved and has another shot at finding a loving home ...
I would say, "It's just a human" one of many.

Seems no matter how many experiences you write about, the rescue mission you're so very dedicated to never gets old. Thank you for sharing another compassionate story.

Cats and dogs are precious to man...they love unconditionally
and are great comfort to the lonely and the old...thank you Ed.

Every thing is a gift to us and if
others say it's just this or just
that with no acknowledgement that
these gifts are treasures then they
are not human...

I am appalled at these sorts of
people, and heartbreaking to look
at this beautiful creature so
horribly neglected.

Another great bit of awareness
to the cruelty of mankind
