My Promises

One day when I felt I could do better, this came through.

I promised myself I’d do better,
Call a friend or send a letter.
But I feel I failed again,
No longer wanting to pretend.

I promised myself to work on me,
For only I can make me be
The person I hope to see someday.
Healthy and happy, come what may.

All the times I promise myself
I can do better, take it off the shelf.
Dust it, shine it, follow through;
Dreams can happen if you pursue.

What does all this mean to you?
Who cares what I say or hope to do?
It is I that suffers when I break
The actions I promised myself to take.

If all our promises we could keep,
What havoc we could reap.
The problems of this world could dwindle,
No more lies, no more swindle.

Those wiser than me have said until we repair, rebuild, and fix ourselves we have nothing to give to others. You are well on you way, Eleanor. Good luck and God speed.

By writing the poem you be a good start. Studies show that women lie most often to try to prevent someone pain. Unfortunately, lies like this sometimes cause greater pain than the truth. I try not to promise more than I can deliver. I know it hurts people when I don't promise, but it only hurts for a little while.
