One day seeing the few square meters
of soft earth and crabgrass, he grinned
a pure shiver of delight, he saw
visions of neat rows of plants
carrotplants, lemonbushes,
a pepper or two,
he raced out to the black market
for living seeds for his dream
and tools to cure his every tension,
his shovel bit deep into the willing dirt
he hummed an expecting tune then
struck metal on the second stroke,
the floor of his apartment, and
he fell to the floor, laughter crying
