Nuclear Weapons???
by Hiren Surendra Shah

Monday, July 14, 2003
Not rated by the Author.

This poem was written in May 1998 When India test exploded Nuclear weapons and Presodent Bill clinton imposed severe economic sanctions against India. The first part is addressed to President Clinton and the second part to the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee who is himself a poet. The original poem was 7 pages long and today (19/10/2007), the revised summary of two pages has been inserted.

SHOULD WE TRY TO WIN INTERNATIONAL APLOMB BY MAKING A NUCLEAR BOMBSHOULD WE EXPLORE THE SYNERGY BETWEEN NUCLEAR AND SPIRITUAL ENERGY?

CONDENSED VERSION- TWO PAGES.

Nuclear weapons are  undoubtedly  a  magnificent achievement , a moment of National  pride.

In the absence of proper controls, we could  just be taking ourselves for  a  ride.

Nuclear   powers  enjoy being   International  police, at the same  time hoping for peace.

Wanting to have the cake and  eat  it  too,  will  wonders  never  cease ?

It  is  true   that  we  needed  to  stand  upto  Uncle Sam.

But  we must pull  out  all  stops  to  ensure that  we  do  not  land  up  in  a  Nuclear  Jam.

Being embroiled in many  a scandal, can you  to tell us, Mr President.

That what we should or should not do or set which precedent  ?

Absolute power corrupts absolutely; Power can be even more enticing  than an attractive Paramour.

Problem is now there are Nuclear weapons, we are not restricted to Infantry, Artillery and Armour.

You  want to treat us like a Nuclear rogue,

We have in all respects been aping the west, it is you who put the Nuclear weapons in Vogue.

You  have become  a  nuclear  addict.

But when we even begin doing the same, you have the audacity to contradict.

Vis-a-vis China you want to pursue a  partisan  policy  that caters to your political  expediency.

Then how can you possibly attack us when we are only aiming for Nuclear self sufficiency.

Even though we are both Democracies , you  are hell bent on unfairly favoring China.

Didn’t  you  witness the result when the paparazzi blindly pursued princess Diana.

Your  philandering  & inconsistency reminds one of   Archie shuttling between  Betty  and  Veronica.

Should we not  expect even conduct from the president of United States of America ?

Since you remind me somewhat of Mr Kennedy, I am  a fan of yours so there is no question of  Insult.

But  when you  flirt  a  little too much, this is the result.

You have a saturated Nuclear belly, if  others start, you start behaving  like an International bully.

Did not your G-8 friends tell you  O’ Billy,   Don’t be Silly.

You could have preached only if you were morally as rich as the materially rich other Mr Bill, Mr  Gates.

That alone befits the office of the President of United  States.

I hope you are able to comprehend the message that my words carry,

In case you don’t get back to me after discussing with dear Hillary.

No pun intended, considering your position and personality, you epitomize style, charm and glamour.

To remove hostility, one can be versatile, I mean no harm, just using a little bit of Humor.

There are limits to what  even the most powerful  man on earth can do.

You cannot surpress  the spirit of  many a proud Hindu.

To conclude, Mr President, no matter what you try to do to our economy.

India shall never compromise on her autonomy.

Congratulations Mr Prime Minister, on taking an extremely bold decision.

Hopefully, you shall make commensurate efforts at external liaison and display even vision.

It  is  true   that  considering the security  threat , we  could  not  have  remained docile.

However let  us  also  not  go hammer and tongs at making bomb and Missile.

Having  practiced disarmament for too long, we could no longer remain to be Inactive.

However we need to be reflective, Nuclear weapons have to be put in proper perspective.

We cannot afford to get carried away by blind emotion.

Other forces also need to be employed and  put  into motion.

This in not a cricket match where you can win, loose or have  a tie.

Everybody stands to loose once the bombs and missiles begin to fly.

Does  it  matter  whether we get  the weapons from abroad or use Indigenous sources.

When  the  country is  faced  with  severe  paucity  of  resources.

On the domestic scene, you have maintained that we  are pseudo  Secular.

Since we have other pressing problems, don’t you think that to some extent we are pseudo Nuclear.

We  have  proved  to  the  world  that  we  have  Nuclear  Aptitude.

It  could  one  day  prove  to  be  a  disaster  of  uncontrollable  and  unmitigated  magnitude.

As  a  deterrence. the nuclear  weapons  undoubtedly boast of  utility,

In the absence of basic infrastructure facilities and  amenities however, they reek of  futility.

It  could  be  a  case  of  misguided  Myopia, one of   extremely  counterproductive  Euphoria.

Instead, we can go back to our roots  and  focus  on  making India  a  spiritual  Utopia.

Should  we  focus on  making hydrogen bomb which is based on atomic  fission  or

Should  we  aim  for  cultural  and  Social  fusion.

Rather  than  straightway  aiming  on  the  Nuclear  thrust , building bombs that can  catastrophically burst.

Should  we  not be focusing on building goodwill and trust.

To solve a problem you need both method and Motive.

One has already been taken care of but can spill blood, for other we must focus on a culture that is Native

In  Management  the  focus  in  not  on cutting cost, it  is  on  generating  revenue.

Rather then pursuing the looming Nuclear Ghost, should  we  not  be  examining  a  spiritual Avenue.

Let me reiterate aloud that if we are never to see the cloud that appears like a Mushroom.

To remove darkness you cannot take darkness out of, you have to bring light into a Room.

If  the world  is  to shed  its  new  found  Indifference,

We should be able to prevail on the world, that  the  BJP  is  actually  a  party  with  a  difference.

Let me mince no word, using prose and poetry let this be loudly read and heard.

We are lucky  to survive two world wars, we cannot afford a third.

The  world  has seen that  you  are  a  bold  prime  Minister,  we  also  need  to  show  the  poet.

It is  important to  get  across  that  our designs are not sinister,  it was difficult to remain quiet.
