Sounds like a book I would definitely be intersted in God Bless Michelle~

Marriage, Kidneys, and Other Dark Organs (Book) - 12/4/2002 3:50:58 PM
This book is obviously deeply felt by the author. It reveals the inner and outer turmoils of an Italian emigrant family with a domineering father, a mother who tries her best but only succeeds in playing the subsurvient role and a child who strives to keep the peace. It is a story rich in details of Italian life and full of fasinating characters. It is told with a mix of humor that bowls you over and pathos that brings your tears. Most of all, this is a story about how the lack of love affects a child who grows up with two troubled people.

Marriage, Kidneys, and Other Dark Organs (Book) - 11/4/2002 6:56:14 PM
The title “Marriage, Kidneys and Other Dark Organs” by Venera DiBella Barles, would seem likely to be the perfect reading companion for a long wait in the radiology clinic, but is devoid of literal references to kidneys. It is actually a visceral trail of the author’s real life experience growing up in an immigrant family household where a colorful but dominating father leaves the family raw and vulnerable. Between tears, I laughed my kishkas out. There are powerful emotional strains in these memoirs that anyone, regardless of background, can relate to, whether the understanding stems from the “school of hard knocks” or from the comfortable voyeuristic vantage point of the den recliner.

Marriage, Kidneys, and Other Dark Organs (Book) - 11/2/2002 2:45:05 PM
Told with great humor and compassion, this is the inspirational story of the author's journey from childhood despair and confusion to ultimate understanding and acceptance of those who wronged her. Wonderful family photos appear throughout. Highly recommended.

Marriage, Kidneys, and Other Dark Organs (Book) - 11/2/2002 9:55:54 AM
I have been anxiously awaiting this book and it certainly didn't let me down - it was well worth the wait. Once I started , it was difficult to lay down. There were many laughs as well as tears. Thank you for sharing with us such a moving account of your life.

Marriage, Kidneys, and Other Dark Organs (Book) - 11/2/2002 7:11:26 AM
The juxtiposition of joy, love, hate, and evil is very well shown in this insight- ful look into a real life. It shows how a person can come thru dark times emerging with humor and joy. A good book for someone in a dark period to read to give hope that they too can emerge into the light!

So You Want to be a Wife (Short Story) - 11/26/2007 7:44:05 PM

Hey, I know this place. I see you have not mentioned it to protect the names of "the innocent". My mom used to go there and she packed candy bars and alcohol in her suitcase. Good thing they don't have bag check at the door. I personally subscribe to Miraval in Arizona for "reduction program".

Was on the ship the Conte Di Savoia at around the same time in 1937. It was a luxury ship. We boarded in around June 1937 and stayed in Italy 1 1/2 visiting relatives. The author is correct- it was a difficult time with impending war.

Poet, one can easily see that you are a great addition to the pages of poetry here at “The Den.” I enjoyed the read, and I just do hope it isn’t too late to find out whether or not I actually was here yesterday or shall be here tomorrow. But, sooner or later I might be able to determine if I was here today… lol. Welcome to “The Den.” May you and yours have a great holiday. Take care and be well.
