Gender Diffrences (Article) - 9/5/2002 9:13:31 AM
To side with “environment” is to side with nurture over nature. Most scientists believe it to be a combination of both biology (genetics) and environment (interaction). Even Freud himself said, “Anatomy is destiny.” /// There are certainly numerous innate physiological differences between men and women. Different hormones predominate in each gender and different body types develop as a result. Women do tend to do better in verbal skills, while men tend to excel at math, and spatial orientation. Some of the other differences seem almost natural. Women place more emphasis on “meaningful relationships” and that makes intuitive sense because women think of stability for the sake of any future children. As a result, women see sex as part of an understood commitment, while men often see sex as, well, recreational fun. /// Nowhere have the gender differences come into play more than in big city Fire Departments. Women’s groups have long opposed the rigorous physical exams that are part of the entrance exams which indeed few females pass. The problem is that the job is one that emphasizes upper body strength and endurance. In the FDNY (NYC's Fire Dept) where I work, there have been a number of law suits filed by women and in 1982 about 38 women were assigned positions even though they didn't pass the physical. Few of them remain on active duty today and few have passed the physicals since then. In that job anatomy is indeed destiny in that the men have come to expect very little from a woman in that job. One old timer once said, “To say ‘woman are weaker’ is a redundancy.” So far, that gender equality experiment in NYC’s FDNY has been a failure and so far, no amount of training or extra conditioning has been able to change that. /// Fine writing despite our few disagreements.
