BECAUSE IT'S THERE, or, why I write (Article) - 1/31/2014 8:30:27 AM
As good a reason as any. I have a burning desire to share things with others. By writing what I think down and sharing it with others, I may be contributing, in a small way, to civilization. And I may not. But at least, thanks to the Internet, my written legacy will be around much longer than I am and may be rediscovered someday in the future, like finding Elvis alive. Ron

ODD STAGINGS #8: The Civil War Sound of Music (Article) - 12/15/2013 7:46:27 AM

New musical instruments #7: THE COMPUTER GENERATED VIRTUOSO by Joel Sattler (Article) - 1/23/2012 7:12:59 PM
Y'know, I'm not at all certain that is such a good idea. Reminds me of the Star Trek NG episode where Data is giving a violin recital, and he is asked how he did it...he said he listened to recordings of all the greatest violinists and incorported all their techniques so that he could obtain the opptimum results. Part of the interest, genius (and fun, I suspect) of music is how a musician's interpretaiton informs the oeiginal composition. It's more interesting to listen to say, a Beethoven symphony as done by a number of differenrt orchestras and compare the differences. To me the diversity of interprettion makes the individual composition more interesting. Chip Bergeron

THE THEORY OF THE 3 SOULS by Joel Sattler (Article) - 6/22/2010 12:59:13 AM
They said that man created God so he had someone intangible to blame. Then and there man got his first soap box to stand up over the plebe and pounding his chest declared himself a philosopher which at the end, a theory about 3 souls would come handy! Georg PS. continue on this path and some Pope will vanish you! (LOL)

New musical instruments #2: THE 24-STRING VIOLIN-CELLO by Joel Sattler (Article) - 3/15/2010 4:46:12 AM
As one of those people that looooooooves Paganini, Sarazate, Stern, Heifetz, it is difficult for me to see those old boys playing that weird instrument, although, the Rolling Stones riding a few lines of coke should do marvelous tunes with it! Georg

THE S-THEORY OF TIME by Joel Sattler (Article) - 2/28/2010 6:38:38 PM
What you say is right. What exists is Present. Time, if we accept theory of relativity, can be divided in past, present and future. But if we accept the theory of absolute time, then there exists only present.

THE DEAL WE MADE WITH THE DOGS by Joel Sattler (Article) - 1/10/2010 6:51:11 AM
Very sadly, we seem to have forgotten that ancient pact these days. Wolves, one of the few predators that never attack man are now being gunned down en masse, even from the skies of Alaska. And dogs are now being abused, and abandoned, and dumped in record numbers - everywhere. We truly need to re-examine history, and renew that wondrous pact you speak of.

WHY HISTORY IS ALWAYS A LIE by Joel Sattler (Article) - 1/9/2010 2:08:47 AM

SUNDOWN TOWN song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 1/3/2015 11:41:44 AM
Poem that's powerful and desperately sad. Understanding America is a dire thing for a Brit to do. It's like a cigarette advert. Looks good from the outside. The salesmanship is slick and yet in reality it has heartfelt hidden hatred towards a person just because of skin????!!! Worse than SA ever was. I have witnessed it whilst working in Texas and, Alabama. I made a point of going to - Black only nights - letting them know that in England such events would be illegal, if they existed, as would whites, blues, pinks, green only nights would be. As Otis, Sammy, NKC... found out when they were treated by public and royalty alike. Being loved by "mixed race" audiences.

SUNDOWN TOWN song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 1/3/2015 10:06:22 AM
from Wikipedia: A sundown town is a town, city, or neighborhood in the US that was purposely all-white. The term came from signs that were posted stating that people of color had to leave the town by sundown. They are also sometimes known as “sunset towns” or “gray towns”. In some communities, signs were placed at the town's borders with statements similar to the one posted in Hawthorne, California, which read "Nigger, Don't Let The Sun Set On YOU In Hawthorne" in the 1930s. James W. Loewen, the Washington, D.C.-based author, told The Washington Post in 2006 he found reports of thousands of such places, and sometimes, the sign makers tried to get clever. "Some came in a series, like the old Burma Shave signs, saying, " . . . If You Can Read . . . You'd Better Run . . . If You Can't Read . . . You'd Better Run Anyway." In some cases, the exclusion was official town policy or was promulgated by the community's real estate agents via restrictive covenants governing who could buy or rent property. In others, the policy was enforced through intimidation. This intimidation could occur in a number of ways, including harassment by law enforcement officers. Since the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and especially since the Civil Rights Act of 1968 prohibited racial discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing, the number of sundown towns has decreased. However, as sociologist James W. Loewen writes in his book on the subject, Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism (2005), it is impossible to precisely count the number of sundown towns at any given time, because most towns have not kept records of the ordinances or signs that marked the town's sundown status. He further notes that hundreds of cities across America have been sundown towns at some point in their history. Additionally, Loewen notes that sundown status meant more than just that African-Americans were unable to live in these towns. Essentially any African-Americans (or sometimes other ethnic groups) who entered or were found in sundown towns after sunset were subject to harassment, threats, and violent acts—up to and including lynching..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sundown_town

GOING BACK TO TIPPYTOE song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 12/29/2014 8:43:07 AM
Nice and catchy. Only one thing… Like the "wheat fields of St. Paul" moonshine running in Louisiana just ain't so. Don't have to be run there… Except maybe, in Tippy Toe. Ron

OF MICE AND MEN song lyrics by Joel Sattler based on the poem by Burns (Poetry) - 12/28/2014 8:16:06 AM
A great poem with a sober look at life. I'm not sure it makes a great song. Brought back childhood memories of when we would watch the thrashing of the oats. Bundles had been stacked in the field for some time after cutting. When they were picked up with pitchforks, underneath each were 20 or 30 scurrying mice and snakes, along with, sometimes, rats. Unlike Burns's poem, the pitchforks usually tried to kill as many as possible because these rodents ate much of the crop. Ron

LEFT IN THE DUST song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 12/22/2014 11:04:32 AM
Pardon my humor, but while reading this all I could think of is the manly propensity to let the woman clean the house. When she leaves, and there's no one there to do the dusting, it collects quite quickly. Many men are, quite literally, "left in the dust." Ron

THE LAST CHRISTMAS song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 12/21/2014 9:06:19 AM
I think it might be titled better, A Christmas Plea. A couple of other Christmas songs come to mind, most notably, White Christmas. This one deserves to be set to music and performed. Ron

DRESSED TO KILL song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 11/24/2014 11:23:26 AM
I really like this one. It has "hit" written all over it. The lyrics may be a little bit too complex near the end for young peoples' attention spans, but I like the driving force that a good woman could put across. Ron

SANDS OF TIME BLUES song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 11/19/2014 11:00:03 AM

BRAVE LITTLE DOG song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 11/14/2014 9:06:03 AM

MT FUJI WATCHED by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 10/6/2014 11:52:49 PM
What a vivid poem that brings back fond memories of Japan. My wife and I are both retired Major's from the USAF and we lived in Japan for three years. I walked in Peace Park in Hiroshima. I passed a couple morning for a loved one. I told them I was sorry about what happened. The father said, "No, not America fault. It was Emperor's fault. He lied to us" and he walked on his way. In reality Japan was the aggressor and like ISIS today people sacrificed their livers for a fake God who provided false hopes. In the end, good triumphed over evil but what a price to pay. Amen

MT FUJI WATCHED by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 10/3/2014 6:49:25 AM
I love historical songs. They convey much emotion and longing for what could've been as well as what was. Mount Fuji may be a bigger threat than those nuclear bombs. Fukushima certainly is. I've been watching the TV series, Manhattan. There was much soul-searching among scientists there about what they were doing. I had a roomer in my rented house once, for nine months, a chemist who worked on the project, he didn't say anything about it, but he was suffering still from the after affects of his experience. Checked himself into the psychiatric ward at Mayo Clinic for a couple of weeks. Ron

DO OR DIE song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 10/2/2014 10:33:26 AM

LUST IS A LAKE (Poetry) - 9/27/2014 8:59:57 AM

TIME IS NOTHING song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 9/15/2014 8:59:37 AM
I really like this with a really heavy metal physics beat. Right up my alley. I would only change one thing, "wroth" to "wrought." Ron

AMNESTY 100% AMNESTY song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 9/11/2014 7:35:54 AM
A folk song for today with a strong message. I have mixed thoughts about this, knowing that allowing unbridled immigration would overpopulate the country very quickly and cause tremendous infrastructure problems already experienced in many major cities. In many countries in the world, the United States stands like a beacon of hope to the oppressed and poor. They would flood here by the millions if given the chance,… Even from China. The children at the southern border are just the tip of the mass migration that would ensue if we said, "you all come." I'm sorry, but that's the fact of the matter. Most people in this world would be much better off staying where they are and making their own nest a better place. Ron

THE GIRL LOST IN THE NIGHT song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 9/7/2014 7:45:46 AM
An interesting story song. A lot of emotional conflict. Perhaps a hidden rapist inside… Instead of saying "she got in the door," it by the better to say, "she got in the car." Ron

SEAL YOUR FATE song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 9/3/2014 7:20:05 AM

SHAKESPEARE UPSTART CROW song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 6/29/2014 11:01:26 AM
Very interesting. Especially the charges against Shakespeare and the mystery surrounding his many works and whether he existed at all. The song should probably put to the music of an English ballad. To be learned by all Shakespeare lovers as the other side of the coin. Ron

SHAKESPEARE UPSTART CROW song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 6/29/2014 10:31:02 AM
Robert Greene complaining of Shakespeare's plagiarism in the 1592 book "Greene's Groats-worth of Witte": 'Base-minded men all three of you, if by my miserie you be not warnd: for unto none of you (like mee) sought those burres to cleave: those Puppets (I meane) that spake from our mouths, those Anticks garnisht in our colours. Is it not strange, that I, to whom they all have beene beholding: is it not like that you, to whom they all have been beholding, shall (were yee in that case as I am now) bee both at once of them forsaken? Yes trust them not: for there is an upstart Crow, beautified with our feathers, that with his Tyger's hart wrapped in a Player's hyde, supposes he is as well able to bombast out a blanke verse as the best of you: and beeing an absolute Iohannes fac totum, is in his owne conceit the onely Shake-scene in a countrey. O that I might entreate your rare wits to be employed in more profitable courses: & let these Apes imitate your past excellence, and never more acquaint them with your admired inventions.'

THE WATER TOOK HER AWAY song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 5/9/2014 7:35:36 AM
A great song moralizing the tragedy of flights of fancy like being photographed in your wedding dress in water. I don't think the last two words, "surrender, surrender," fit the story very well because I don't think she surrendered. Perhaps her husband and his assistant did. Ron

THE WATER TOOK HER AWAY song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 5/8/2014 9:26:15 AM
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Monday, August 27, 2012 "I can't anymore, it's too heavy." Those were the chilling last words of a beautiful Canadian bride who drowned in a river during a photo shoot last week after her wedding dress became soaked and dragged her under, a friend told a Canadian news agency. Maria Pantazopoulos, 30, was having a photographer take shots for a "trash the dress" photo series when she waded into a river near Dorwin Falls in Rawdon, Quebec, at around 2 p.m. Friday, authorities said. Maria Pantazopoulos, 30, who was swept away in the current near Dorwin Falls in Rawdon. Meant to evoke high-glamor fashion shoots, "trash the dress" photos feature brides posing in gritty or natural settings like beaches, forests or city streets. Pantazopoulos was married on June 9, but wanted to immortalize the moment with a collection of playful snapshots, a friend said. Her husband, Billy, wasn't there for the shoot. "She's a really fun girl, and she just didn't want her wedding dress sitting in a box in the closet," family friend Leeza Pousoulidis told the Montreal Gazette. "She said 'I want to have fun with my wedding dress. I want to have great pictures and memories of me in my wedding dress.'" Louis Pagakis, her photographer, was taking some shots near the edge of the river when Pantazopoulos said she wanted to go in. "At one point, she told him, 'I want you to take some photos of me floating in the water,'" Anouk Benzacar, the photographer's wife and a friend of the bride, told Canada's QMI Agency. Real estate agent Maria Pantazopoulos, 30, drowned after her wedding dress got soaked and she was dragged into the river near a rushing waterfall in Canada. The garment quickly became soaked, and the deceptively quick tides swept the young bride downstream. Pagakis jumped in to try to save her, but the water-logged garment's pull was like "an anvil" and pulled them both under, local police told QMI. "She was screaming and scratching and trying to stay above water," Benzacar told the agency. "[Louis] tried to swim with her, but she was pulling him down. "She was too heavy. He couldn't breathe anymore," she said. Pantazopoulos' body was found four hours later by a local scuba diver, who joined rescuers after hearing about the incident, CBC News reported. Pagakis and his assistant were treated at a local hospital for shock. Family members didn't speak to the media after the accident, but Pousoulidis, the friend, told the Montreal Gazette they were "destroyed." Pantazopoulos was a real estate agent and had recently bought a house with her husband in Laval, near Montreal, The Gazette reported. The two were looking forward to starting a family. Local authorities told QMI that swimming was forbidden at the spot where Pantazopoulos drowned because the tides were too strong. Mario Michaud, a wedding photographer in Montreal, told CTV that a bride he photographed at the river in May nearly suffered the same fate. "Brides think they are going to get a beautiful picture, but they don't realize how heavy a wet wedding dress can be," he said. ============

THE WATER TOOK HER AWAY song lyrics by Joel Sattler (Poetry) - 5/8/2014 8:40:47 AM
I have actually read about this really had happened in the news a few months ago. A bride was unable to get herself out of danger of being dragged away by the water because her gown was too heavy. The relatives couldn't save her either because of the heavy gown she was wearing. This described that incidence so well. I'm so sorry this had happened. Most heartbreaking moment!!!! Sandie
