Dealmaker (Book) - 4/20/2002 1:16:42 PM
I was privileged to review this book prior to publication and I repeat now, what I said at the time. In 'Dealmaker', Gigi Phillips proves herself to be Queen of Chill. With a wonderfully adept Post-Modern technique and distinctly different narrative, her total mastery of the language will grip your heart and your soul from the very first page. In a style that is clear and uncluttered, the author displays her gift for writing, and her equally precious gift for understanding how to inspire, provoke and arouse people's minds. This is the power of Gigi Phillip's pen. It is a power she should wield with caution as she tells a tale of terror that spans six decades and touches the lives of numerous families. Dealmaker is a book to be handled with care-with great care-in the full light of day. Lock it in a cupboard at night. Do not be tempted to unleash the demons when they are at their most powerful.
If, like me, you enjoy finding new blood on the literary scene, you'll LOVE what Gigi Phillips has done with Dealmaker. It's a scary story, a story of abject terror in places, a story that will have you white-knuckling the pages. But it's a story that will leave you waiting for her next release - the same as I am. A truly AMAZING debut!

Dealmaker is a masterful work that artfully blends chilling suspense with rich nostalgia. The characters are truly palpable and beautifully fleshed out. Gigi Phillips' ability to create subtle and blatant literary images is both astounding and unforgettable. Her metaphoric mastery of the macabre is as uncanny as the Dealmaker, itself! A must-read for fans of the dark and enigmatic.

Nice to read something entertaining on here for a change--by someone who knows how to string two words together and isn't afraid of the "f" word. Well done.

This one is a fast read but damn good write though. I had just wrote one in the crime genre which was a true story with nightmare elements titled "Oct 13, 1993," which is written after knowing that friend of mine is the murderer of a cab driver. It is what if H.P. Lovecraft wrote a court type story, you get the idea -- it is true but very descriptive. I am going to see what you have in poetry. I agree with Eddie Petty on this one -- writing is a drug addiction but not like if someone has an addiction to herion. Writing is a mind stimilant but takes a lot out of the writer when it is a long piece.

A Killer Book (Short Story) - 5/1/2001 10:18:35 PM
Gigi Phillips's "A Killer Book" is an astounding exercise in using metaphor. Andy Cutler, while writing her sixth book entitled SIX DEMONS, is held captive by another demon: the ruthless and unrelenting grip of her muse.
How often I, as a fellow raconteur, have felt bewildered staring at my word processor's flashing cursor. I would do almost anything to finish writing a piece -- if I had one to finish that is. The muse is sometimes hard to jumpstart. Writing's a drug. It's the life source of frenzy, fear, pleasure and pain. Therefore, the piece's title, seems eerily prophetic to me. Read it, and decide for yourself.
