Families and Society (Article) - 8/1/2008 2:24:30 PM
This topic rang a bell with me. I taught in the public schools for thirty years and from that experience I found most of the great kids came from real families--not just people that shared the same house off doing his or her thing day in and day out. Leaving the TV off, the iPod on a shelf and limiting the Internet to spend time together staying in touch while sharing experiences and being aware of the changes that take place inside each individual each day are super important. We are evolving creatures--always changing. I'm willing to bet that the boys that did the Columbine slaughter came from a house full of people living separate lives and they did not know each other.

This is an interesting poem, Daniel. The title drew me and then, when I read the reference to the long-time friend you just met, I began thinking of many scenarios. Maybe a friend from childhood with whom you've reconnected or maybe a new acquaintance who is so similar to you that it seems you've known each other all your lives. "Universes have we traveled together And many we've wandered alone...." is a phrase that adds to the dual-meanings that this poem could have. I love poems that can be interpreted a variety of ways. They're a sign of good, sound writing. Thanks, Jill
