I found this piece to be both trite and grammatically atrocious. Commas are placed arbitrarily throughout, "I" is left uncapitalized the majority of the time, and adverbs are scattered all over the place.
My advice to the author: Rule number one of writing is show don't tell. What I mean by that is the piece lacks subtlety because the characters simply announce how they feel (example: I'm depressed) instead their being a description of their actions implying how they feel.
There are no paragraph breaks, and sentences are all about the same length, which leads me to point of advice number 2: If all your sentences are the same length, you could have the strongest story in the world, and for some reason, people would find it boring to read. Why? One of the reasons why Chuck Palahniuk has found so much success via his writing is because he masterfully utilizes sentence fragments and plays with sentence length throughly. This seems like a silly, simple thing, but if a writer uses sentence length effectively, you can either speed up a high action scene and make it more intense that way, or you can slow a scene way, way down for dramatic effect.
There's also the issue of a coin, a symbol for materialism and capitalism being the item that magically makes people happy. I would argue that using a coin is not the most effective item to use to symbolize happiness.
I would rate this story a 3 out of 10.
