I loved this one. It takes a powerful statement about the necessity for kindness (you never know which good-bye will be the last one) and wraps it in the perspective of a man who cannot see the shades of grey in life. "Listen to me. I got something to say" is such a poignant plea at the end it brought tears to my eyes. Carol

This one took my breath away. Bar none, one of the best stories I've read in a long time. I feel as if O Henry came back and penned a story set in the country. Your imagery, use of description to heighten the rushing sensation of Martin's falling headlong into this new way of life, the very cadence of your sentances is perfect. I only bemoan the few pages trimmed before posting - would have loved to read them as well. Carol

Interesting point of view. I like it.Reminds me of the Black Acre Farm in South Texas.

This story has the detail of Steinbeck writing, and the punch of a Hitchcock ending. You have some great talent, Mr. Rowan!
