Mental Fitness For Confidence And Winning In Life (Article) - 9/23/2005 8:46:54 PM
"Like an athlete who trains to exhaustion, every day, to prepare their bodies for having strong muscles and lungs -- must also discipline their minds for control, concentration and self-confidence". This is a very interesting thought. I have always wondered why there are no mental gyms which are far more important than physical gyms. To me Mental fitness is the ability to think in the direction in which you want to think. Ralph Waldo emerson had said," Concenctration is the secret of sucess in politics, in sports, in business, in all fields of human endeavor. There are two types of concentration. Just as in sport, if one's legs are weak, one shall still be able to play the sport one is interested in. Similarly the subject of interest will elicit spontaneous concentration. On the other hand there is a general concentration(like having strong legs in sport) which can be reinforced by exercises. For self confidence it is equally important to be in the job you are interested in. If both the concentrations are weak, chances of success slim considerably. This is also pointed out by the author of world famous book, " The monk who sold his Ferrari". He advocates building of both will power(general concentration) and doing the work you enjoy. Doing one hour of Yoga and Meditation is useless if it is to be followed by 10 hours of misery at workplace. According to the great mystic Osho, totally being absorbed in work like some great artists is itself the biggest meditation. He says that one cannot become happy by being meditative but when one is meditative, one is automatically happy. Crisis management is also very important in today's stress filled past faced world. Yoga exercises like Shavasan and Yog Nidra are like the ones described above. That apart, one should read good stuff- management and spiritual books which not only enrich the soul but also provide guidance by people who have already been through similar situations before. Appropriate reactions to situations in day to day life are also important. One has to know when to respond strongly, when to be mild and when to be unresponsive.One has to learn to respond instead of reacting. Unless one learns this,doing mental fitness exercises is superfluous. Really unique write-up, Don. Let me know if you are aware of any mental gym.
