Thought of the Day - Help or Hindrance (expanded) (Article) - 9/22/2014 7:33:06 AM
Wow, a lot packed into this brief discussion. I must say that I agree with you 100%. So many of the "gifts" we have given ourselves have turned into plagues. I believe in moderation and even frugality, but most don't, getting themselves into trouble at every turn.
While I've been helped throughout my 50 years of spinal cord injury paralysis by, what I call, "just-in-time technology," most people do not need these, sometimes expensive, technologies just the lead normal lives, like I do. I was fortunate to be able to leave my family in my early 20s and not have any more physical or financial help from them at all. But, 22 years ago, I was forced to hire help to get me ready to go to work every day and take care of my daily physical needs. By allowing others to help, and paying them for doing it, I have led a more fulfilling life. The downside is that most helpers are not willing to go where I want to go or do what I want to do, so they become a hindrance to my progress unless I can work around them.
Ironically, I am writing a diabolical short story about how all of the nuclear power plants around world are forced off-line and go to melt down without being able to be stopped. I call it, Poison Earth, to be posted here in the story section very soon.

New jobs one state, lost jobs in another? (Article) - 1/17/2014 10:12:10 AM
You are so right, Karen. Too often those jobs go overseas, or they are simply abandoned and left to die on the vine by vultures masquerading as venture capitalists. It's a zero sum game in which those at the top win, and workers lose. Repeat those activities a million times and we are talking serious losses. The losers are too busy trying to keep body and soul together, while the winners ride off into the sunset looking for more gold to take.
New jobs one state, lost jobs in another? (Article) - 1/16/2014 12:09:46 PM
I live in Houston. Traffic is a mess. Every little shutdown business is opening all over the city. Housing is booming, partly because of interest rates. You can get a mansion here at one fourth the cost of the Eastern shore or California, and everyone is coming here, mostly from California, but from other states as well.
My partner has a dry cleaning business, but business is way down, so she makes most of her money through alterations. Even though her business is in one of the hottest business districts in the city, other dry-cleaning and alteration shops have failed and other businesses that were successful before are failing all around her.
The banks are not lending to small business so that they can expand, upgrade or hire people. Many are having to cut their staffs. I believe that many of the people coming into town lost their jobs and sold their houses. They are starting businesses without any knowledge of how to run a business and are failing miserably. In spite of the apparent prosperity here, the situation is dismal.
The fact is that the stimulus money is not going to infrastructure projects and start up businesses with great promise for the future but into small handouts to the general public for increasing buying power they don't have. The lion's share is going to the banks from the Fed Reserve and the banks are buying up property for future gain and stocks in major companies that continue to outsource and downsize, so the stagnant situation does not improve.
Read Ed Phillips articles for very knowledgeable and practical solutions to the problem that the politicians seem unable to enact. We, the people need to understand that we can't just be successful by opening a business with no knowledge and we can't expect education to get us a good job either. We need to carefully spend our money and save our money in the places where it creates jobs rather than just throw what little we have to spend away.
“In Wonderment of United States of America's Declaration of Independence” (Article) - 7/5/2013 5:32:53 AM
We the people should not forget that we have the right, “to alter or abolish it.”
I'm concerned about strict constructionists that do not consider changes in society since the Declaration (and Constitution, particularly) were written. As we embark on the twenty first century, our society is surrounded by different circumstances than when we declared ourselves free from England. It is time that we altered the Constitution so that it reflects more fairly what, “We the people,” want.

“In Wonderment of United States of America's Declaration of Independence” (Article) - 2/25/2010 7:25:38 PM
Beautifully Patriotic. Yes, we are a "Representative Republic" not a "Democracy" and therefore "we the people" elect our representatives who are of like mind. Of course the underlying premise is always trying to do what is best for the country as a whole. This seems to have gotten put aside lately. Arrogance, greed, bribes, and far too many special interest groups have taken over our country today.
Be always safe,

Touch (Poetry) - 6/16/2008 9:47:59 AM
We have to be able to help others, do things for them, they cannot always do for themselves, lead them in the path of righteousness, try to get them to have faith in God and believe in them. Swear words are not my thing either and I try to correct my friends as they say them. sometimes they just look at me and think whatever.
Once (Poetry) - 6/16/2008 9:46:42 AM

A Reflection on Politics (Poetry) - 2/1/2008 12:38:16 PM
I wrote a poem back in September called, 'Reflections Falling to Shards"...this poem reminded me of one of the verses...
"Fairest of all, in broken pieces, and all . . .
Faceless now, on vanity’s floor
A broken looking glass, throws back,
much less than more . . ."
So true are your thoughts reflecting here, Karen
