In Admiration of Charla Nash (Short Story) - 11/17/2009 11:14:00 PM
A thought. Charla obviously made an impression on you. Tell us more of how you were affected. Use strong verbs, not variations of "was." If it began with a TV show, start there with your feelings, reactions, and then blend in Charla's story. I sense it lies between the lines of your posted story. For example, "I peeked between the fingers that covered my eyes. Her face. The Horror. How could that happen to anyone? I reached for the remote. I couldn't bear to hear Oprah ask those questions. ..."

Ms. Nash received horrific, life-altering injuries. Her eyelids, nose and lips were virtually torn from her face; her hands appeared as if they had gone through a paper-shredder—as it was described by the responding paramedics. She lost her left hand completely, and the right only has her thumb remaining. She was blinded and badly disfigured as a result of the attack and received a further blow when she recently had to have her eyes surgically removed due to infection. She has suffered greatly and has endured much pain, and although the road ahead is very long, I have no doubt that she will triumph over this horrific tragedy based on the strength and courage I witnessed during an interview on the Oprah Winfrey Show. I do not intend this article to be about anything other than the extraordinary human being who endured this brutal, near-lethal attack, and who inspired me more than I think I’ve ever been inspired in my lifetime. So I will not address the controversial issues surrounding this incident: the debate of keeping wild animals as pets, the reaction of the owner of the chimpanzee and her subsequent actions and/or statements, any pending lawsuits or legal issues, the attitude of 911 dispatchers, or the response time and efficiency of authorities on that day. However, after reading an on-line article entitled “Did Oprah Go Too Far?” by Buck Wolf, and perusing the reader comments, I want to address a couple of things before I go any further. Some reader comments included personal attacks on Oprah Winfrey, most of which had little or nothing to do with the issue at hand, and seemed entirely out of place and personal. Political affiliation and race were brought into the discussion as well, and for the life of me, I do not see how they are relevant. I do not see what President Obama or former Governor Sarah Palin have to do with the wonderful person that is Charla Nash or with Oprah’s decision to interview her. There was a question about the graphic nature of the interview as it applied to children who may have been viewing the show as it aired in the afternoon. I feel, for all intents and purposes, that The Oprah Winfrey Show is geared toward adults and should not be watched by children. Sufficient warnings were given prior to showing the graphic footage that most found disturbing and upsetting. Children could certainly have been sent from the room if their parents had concerns about its impact on their children. There was also a question about Oprah’s motive for doing the interview in the first place. Did she cross any lines? Was in sensationalizing? Was it about ratings? Was it racist on Oprah’s part to demean a Caucasian woman by showing the world her disfigured face? None of us know her motives, only Oprah knows. But it is my humble opinion that Ms. Winfrey conducted the interview with compassion and genuine concern for Ms. Nash and the horror she had to endure and continues to endure. I’m sure ratings came into the decision to do the interview, but I do not think it was Ms. Winfrey’s sole purpose at all. Cynics will believe what they want regardless and will continue to question Ms. Winfrey’s intentions, and everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, but mine is that it was sincere. And just a comment to the naysayers who believe Oprah profited heavily from this interview yet did not donate her profits to Ms. Nash and her family. I suppose we are all used to Oprah being very generous on her show, like her big Christmas giveaways, after all she has helped many, many people financially. And I admit that I found myself asking why Oprah did not give Ms. Nash money at the conclusion of the interview. But who am I to say what Oprah did or did not give to Ms. Nash? Perhaps Ms. Winfrey did provide financial assistance to Ms. Nash but chose to do it privately. It is something to consider. But then again, Ms. Winfrey is under no obligation to do so, regardless of her wealth. There was a question about whether the interview should have been done at all; whether or not Charla’s veil should have been lifted to expose the graphic nature of the injuries to her face; and whether or not the painful questions Ms. Winfrey asked Ms. Nash were appropriate or not. I surmise that everything was discussed with Ms. Nash prior to taping and that the interview was given with her full knowledge and consent. I don’t believe Oprah surprised Charla by asking her if she was willing to lift her veil or by asking her such difficult and seemingly painful questions. I am sure Ms. Nash was aware of the context of the interview and was prepared in advance of the taping of the show. I am also sure that if Oprah had not conducted this interview, the paparazzi and others would be hounding Ms. Nash to get pictures and sensational headlines. So I think it is just that she did it on her own terms. But to me, what is truly important in this story, is the amazing spirit, courage, and strength of Charla Nash. If you saw this interview and were not moved by this incredible woman, then I don’t think you ever could be moved. If, after having watched this interview, you were not inspired to get off your butt and face your own trials with courage, then I don’t think anything will ever inspire you to do so. I came away with the greatest respect and admiration for the wonderful person who is Charla Nash. Not once did the word pity come to mind after watching this interview. And even though I shed tears during the interview at the horrors she had to suffer, my first thought at the conclusion was that this is one amazing woman! When Ms. Nash was asked why she wore a veil to hide her face, she responded, “So I don’t scare people.” That is the unselfishness of Charla Nash, that is the heart of someone strong enough to think of others first, even in her darkest hours. She is a remarkably resilient woman. Ms. Nash was concerned that her daughter’s prom was coming up, and as she had lost her eyesight, would not be able to help Briana choose an appropriate gown. “You know how kids are and what they might pick out,” she jested. Though you could not see her smile when she spoke about her daughter, her pride and joy were evident in her words. She is a loving and caring mother. Ms. Nash stated that she continues to get stronger each day and wants to continue moving forward. She was not concerned that her picture would be splashed across the internet, on the television and in print for the world to see. She said, “I am the one who has to live like this.” I am blessed to have been introduced to Ms. Charla Nash through this interview. God bless her and her family and may she have at least one angel by her side each day to encourage her in her difficult journey. Thank you, Charla, for your inspiration, your spirit, and your courage. You are beautiful. Charla Nash, or Charlie as she is known to those close to her, seems to have a great deal of love and support from her family and friends. Review/Comments by Mark Lichterman First off, Lizzie, as a great admirer of you and your writing, I am very happy to see your name once again listed as a contributor on Authors Den. That said, I did not see the Charla interview but did see some out-take scenes and did see Charla lift her veil and was, I will admit, shocked and actually horrified at her appearance. However, at the same time I felt pride in the human race when one such as her had the courage and intestinal fortitude to appear and allow herself to be seen. As far as Opra, I feel she did a service to those that are unhappy with their lives or with their appearance because, no matter how bad their life or appearance, it would take one hell of a lot to beat the life this wonderful, strong person must endure. I remember once, years ago when I did attend a nudist park, there was a lady that had a double mastectomy (this before the time of decent reconstructive surgery). For two weeks she wore a one piece well padded bathing suit. On the third week the lady went nude and, my, God, how I admired the courage and inner beauty of this lady, as, I am sure, did everyone in the park. Your very good friend; Mark

Elizabeth, I'm not supposed to read long or longish documents - doctors orders to delay rapidly failing eyesight - but I couldn't resist this series! Truly couldn't. I love the characters but above all, the language, so right for the period, stately as the settings and the age. Beautiful work; Kudos, Lady! John
