I really enjoyed the article. I'm not married yet but I think the article was great in substance. I know how it feels to be the other man and yep it make a joker wanna open up a can of whoopie on somebody. Nevertheless, that would only put another brother in jail. After several situations where I 've been out with sisters who weren't faithful in terms of a dating relationship I began to examine the cheating aspect a little bit deeper. I personally think its a spiritual battle. If you get a chance check out my article Love is in his Blood. I'd love to get your response on it. If the husband's sister knows--and is a friend of the wife--should she have told? The affair was off and on for 1 1/2 years, yet the sister did not tell the wife... It has been over for 15 months, but the wife and sister-in-law are still uncomfortable with each other over this.

This is a noteworthy article that has as its purpose the raising of a caution sign for those considering or for those already involved in an age-disparity relationship. I note that this article merely summarizes the more detailed commentary of Ruth Houston's article in the First for Women magazine, an article that I have not read. My eye was attracted to this article for three reasons: One is that before retiring as a California court officer, I spent approximately five years in daily participation in a Domestic Relations courtroom thrashing out every conceivable issue that arises between married couples in their twenties to those in their seventies. The second reason is that I have been married to the same woman for over fifty-five years, now, and obviously have become personally aware of many of the issues that can develop in any marital relationship. My third reason is that I have a daughter involved in a serious, long-term relationship with a man fifteen years her junior and, naturally, have observed as an outsider how they relate to one another as a couple. First, Ruth Houston makes no predictions about extreme age differences leading to marital complications. She merely points out the increased likelihood of issues arising because of extreme age differences. Reviewer Julie Donner Andersen (below) correctly points out, I believe, that cheating has more to do with lack of maturity and self-control than it does age difference. I don't believe that statement is in conflict with Ruth Houston's position. More than anything else, I think we're discussing a question of semantics. What I do see in common is that oftentimes the level of maturity and degree of self-control of an individual--especially in the instance of the man being younger than the woman--is age related. As an example, my observations indicate that many women of the age of, say, twenty-five, manifest in their conduct a level of maturity and self-control that is not commonly seen in men until often around thirty. (Far too often men at twenty-five are still thinking only below the belt on the one hand and owning and showing an impressive automobile on the other.) As to "Cheating has more to do with a lack of maturity and self-control than it does age difference," I agree with Ms. Andersen that "To state otherwise is to excuse this all-too-excusable immoral behaviour." But how does one empirically quantify and accurately predict future behaviour probabilities other than by experience and by suggesting that an extreme age difference may exacerbate routine marital differences, especially when those differences are far less likely to be present with couples of reasonably related ages? Again, an example may be that a woman of 43 is focused on raising their children while her husband of 23 is thinking more about going out bowling and having a few beers, all the while harboring a growing resentment because his wife seems to be more interested nowadays in their children than she is in him. This is indeed an issue of maturity and self-control; but this type of issue, I submit--in agreement with Ms. Houston--is statistically more likely to rear its head in a relationship when there is an extreme age difference, especially when it's the man who is the younger of the two. In summary, Author Ruth Houston is merely holding up warning signs. Knowledge is power. The saying, "Ignorance is bliss" doesn't cut it in a marriage. And Ms. Houston closes her article by suggesting "...talk things out together..." as you have read. One last comment, Ms. Anderson and Ms. Houston: Infidelity is an inexcusable immoral behavior. Men cheat for sex; women cheat for emotional intimacy. Nothing new here. "This leads me to conclude that if more people knew how to recognize the warning signs of infidelity, more marriages could be saved." OK, this is new. However, signs or not, once the affair is revealed, very few marriages can be saved.
