Karla, I wish I had your uncanny ability to be so succinct, to deliver so much with so little. Your sister seems to have that talent as well. Well done. Many blessings to you! Be well, Kathy

It seems that many parents cannot, or do not care to see the monsters they've created. For those mothers and/or fathers that cannot see their bullying monsters, there are signs and they'd damn well better open their eyes and minds. For those parents that just do not care, damn it! Let's find a way to hold then legally accountable. Very good, though very sad story, Karla. Mark

No Ordinary Blizzard (Article) - 12/25/2011 4:12:21 PM
I've had a computer for 15 years now and apparently I'm still computer illiterate. It took me 45 minutes just to get a membership and find out how to post a comment on this article. Yeessh! Anyway, I remember the blizzard of 78 very well, I lived in Mansfield OH at the time. I was twenty years old and worked in Ashland OH for Mansfield Packing Co. I got up and looked out side and thought they'd plowed me in and I was ticked that I was going to have to shovel just so I could go to work. Turned out after climbing out the kitchen window, ( which was the only way out of the house since both doors out of the house were buried by snow) that it wasn't just a snow fall it was a snow bombardment. Well, later that day me and several other guys who lived on the street walked up and down checking on the seniors who lived there. Making sure they were ok and if they needed anything. We got quite a grocery list and rounded up several sleds and trudged through the waist deep snow to Krogers about 2 miles away. Took us about 5 hours and $200.00 to get everything and then get it to the right people. It was a bad storm but it brought out the Amish in us, even though we weren't Amish. We each were bound to help our neighbors come hell or high water. By the way, I hear winter is going to be on a Tuesday in Texas this year!

One Life Was Saved: MINE (Article) - 8/10/2008 1:48:07 PM
One quite morning, I was driving along the freeway when from nowhere a big truck hit my car. Obviously, I survived the tragedy but that very microsecond became a turning point in my life. Life is so fragile that it can be taken from us anytime, anywhere without even us knowing it. This accident leads me to define the true meaning of Life. It is not the material stuff - money, physical appearance, job, fame, intelligence, god - that constitute life. When you die you could not carry these earthly things in your grave, but you can carry a smile in your heart. Life is something we simply need to enjoy to its fullest.

So THERE, © 2014, Karla Dorman (Poetry) - 1/21/2014 2:03:24 AM
It's who we are inside that counts. Of course, you know that already, Karla, but other folks don't seem to get it. My mother used to insult me when I was little, and some of those images stayed in my head growing up. Very damaging. I expect we all have someone in our lives who doesn't understand what their words can do. You are caring and special in my book.

You are a wonderful person. You survived adversities. God is for you. His will was done. You are still here. You are here for a readon. Don't let anyone make you feel less than Who You Really Are. A Child Of God. Chosen and Gifted. You Are A Beautiful person. Never let anyone tell you anything less. Forget what they think. It is what God think and feel about you. That is all that matters. God Bless you.

When I was in grade school, I was constantly having to protect someone from bullies. They can be most vicious. Only now am I seeing many people taking up the cause against bullies and I hope that in the future with the use of our powerful media, all bullies will be found out for you they are… people of such low self-esteem that they only get it from tormenting others. I'm glad that you are able to… write it out. Ron

The way you tell it, makes it very honorable to have served. Perhaps this country should have involuntary service like some. That way everyone would become a hero regardless of their otherwise circumstance and we wouldn't have to single out those few in our society who actually signed up or were drafted into the military for a short or long period of time. Ron

Karla, A heart wrenching, gut level poem about the people everyone should thank if only we knew their stories. We recognize the uniforms and go up to them, thank them and shake their hands, but what about the unsung heroes? I always smile at every face I see, hoping that I can bring a little warmth into their day. Your post touched my heart, brought a tear to my eye and yet a smile also. I was married to a Navy pilot and know of the sacrifices and danger they were always part of, watching over one another, helping whenever they could. An amazing write, Karla, so heartfelt! A keeper, for sure. Joy L. Hale Joy L. Hale

You've said it very well, Karla. Served for 11 years, all stateside, and you're right; stateside vets are treated differently even tho we may have been 2,000 miles away from our families for months and months at a time. They wanted me so badly in 2003 they took me and stationed me at Fort Sill, Oklahoma even tho I was already totally disabled. Said they wanted my brain, not my body. And yet, I'm not considered a disabled veteran? Go figure!!!

That is the problem with many of our elected officials believing that those who have made sacrifices are willing to make even more sacrifices when they (elected officials) make none. A very convincing write.

The rich and powerful have always used the trickery of honor and patriotism to enlist armies from the masses of people they controlled and used, most willing to sacrifice many so that they could win their cause that they always disguised as “our cause” with little or no compensation. It's time that United States soldiers are treated differently and compensated according to their sacrifice. Those who have sacrificed more because they have posttraumatic stress syndrome should be cared for like a Congress persons, not denied pension and health care. Ron

Wow! This gives me something to look forward too. Yes, we are planning on a cruise to Alaska to see God's wonders. In the meantime, I just came from a banquet in which Mike Huckabee was the keynote speaker. This was the message I learned from his speech, "Life today is like driving a fast train. If you concentrate too much on what is behind you you will miss the blessings that are in front of you. Even worse than that, you may even steer a bright future right off the tracks." Amen! Peace, love and blessings to you both, John Michael Domino

I recall one night when I was in high school, walking home in 20° below zero in Wisconsin, when the sky opened up with not just green, but red and yellow aurora borealis. As soon as I got home, I called my friend, Doug who was always interested in those sort of things. Doug told me that he had been photographing them for a couple of hours already. Unfortunately, I never saw any of those photographs, but the vivid colors have stayed with me all my life. Your Alaskan trip sounds great! Ron

The total count of those that died will never be really known and from what Mr. Ed wrote, the death toll among pets was terrible. I can't help think about hurricane Carla. Perhaps the most devastating since the hurricane that hit Galveston in 1900. If a hurricane like that ever came to this part of Texas again, the death and property toll would be immense. Ron

That certainly is wonderful and I know you will enjoy it very much. The closest I ever got to Alaska was reaching the Alcan Highway in northern British Columbia, taking a right turn and driving to Jasper, Alberta on a new gravel road. I would love to take the same cruise you are and hopefully will, someday. I was on a Caribbean cruise on of Galveston a few years ago and met a wonderful couple and their teenage children. He was a severely injured quadriplegic. They were from Alaska. They were enjoying the sun and fun of the Caribbean after a long hard winter where they live. Bon voyage! Ron

That's a very nice birthday present. I must remember to get my twin a present for his next birthday, and I know exactly what that will be. It will be a poem because, unless it's about golf or cars, he's unlikely to appreciate it. Ron

Hell's Kitchen, Part Two: Feeeeeeel The Burn, © 2013, Karla Dorman (Poetry) - 6/25/2013 9:42:49 AM
That one hit a familiar bone. Down here in Houston, we are grateful for a shade tree and the fact that temperatures rarely get to three digits (blame it on the humidity). To be out on the range without even a mesquite in sight, without your 10 gallon hat, is damn near suicide. And eating barbecue. Don't they know that just adds heat to the internal fire? Nobody said that Englishmen that go out in the midday sun and Texans who eat barbecue were smart. At least Texans can cool it off a bit with a Corona. ;-) Ron
