In the 1930s a story came out of the University of South Dakota of an event that occurred during an Anthropology class.
The lecture was on Native American culture and society and the professor, a renowned "non-Native" scholar on such knowledge was comparing civilized to non-civilized society. His own research had identified factors that determined how a people would fall into each category. And he had determined that Native American society was not a civilized society based on his factors. His final example was the "fact" that Native societies did not use the wheel for tranporation and thus could not travel great distances for trade and interaction with other peoples.
At that moment an elder Lakota man stood up and said, "Sir, you are mistaken." The elder was dressed in full buckskin with beautiful designs made from porcupine quills, which offered evidence of his origins prior to the coming of the Europeans and their glass beads.
In a strong and direct voice, the elder stated, "we do not require wheels to travel to where we want to go. We just close our eyes and we are there."
The Anthropologist, although startled, tried to take back his class by saying, "here we go again with fairy tales and old legends." At that moment the Lakota elder disappeared as fast as he had appeared.
The wheel have caused much damage to Mother Earth because of its improper use for transportation. The oil spill in the gulf was caused and global warming will continue as long as the wheel is misused. The wheel Iis a sacred circle and soon Mother Earth will cause it to return to that place of honor. Wakanda save us when that happens.
