The subtle descent of the sun left the empty beach cast
In wavering shadows and the fluid flows of the evening tide a lulling lullaby.
She sat far back in the white sand, her eyes staring out over the turquoise water,
Seeing nothing as she was lost deep in thought.

She had parked the rented car just scant feet from his house, and waited.
She sipped on bottled water, watching quietly,
Chiding herself for even doing this but she just had to see...at least, once!
The time had seemed to crawl but at last, she was rewarded.

He came onto the verandah of the house
And stopped just before he descended the stairs.
She had feared she would not know him in real life form,
Though his features were permanently implanted in her mind from his photos.

She would have recognized his sure stride anyway
And the poised but relaxed way he stood.
He was a man, who knew himself,
And knew himself well.

He was completely at ease with his surroundings.
He took her breath away.
He was real!!
He did live and breathe!!

It was too late before she realized he sensed something.
His amazing face turned in the direction of the car,
Her heart plunged and she felt a terrible fool.
Had he recognized her? Please no!

As soon as he turned, she started the car.
She drove away as quickly as was safe
And prayed when she glanced in the mirror backs and saw him with the binoculars,
That she was far enough away.

she had wandered to the quiet beach and sat to mull over her foolishness.
She had come thousands of miles for just that few moments,
A promise to her at least sees him in real life once before she died.
Now, the promise was kept and she knew he was real.

She was so lost in her reverie that she had not heard the soft tread in the sand
until a familiar voice,
a voice heard on the phone so many times, spoke.
"I knew it was you!"

There was a long pause from him as she started
and then turned an agonized face to him.
He drew a quick breath and then uttered almost in awe.
"You are even more beautiful in reality."

"I'm sorry...." was all she could stammer.
"Why? Because you came?
I knew someday we would meet in the flesh, just not when.
I am thrilled you came."

"How did you know? How did you find me?"
"A lucky guess.
I'll explain later"
long pause, "Much later!"

He reached down, taking her trembling hands,
and raised to her feet and into his arms.
He stared long into her tearful eyes,
smiled gloriously at her and then kissed her.

Her promise became a dream come true .
At last, she was in the arms of the man she had loved
so long from so far away
And knew now that it was real!

In the distance, the sun settled,
The waxing moon rose,
The tide strengthened,
Crashing in joy against two sea stack stones leaning closely to each other.
The wind rose to a thrilling pitch
And the night wrapped the lovers in peace
And promises yet to be fulfilled.
