La Kendra just wants to be a typical teenager. But her parents will not her to do anything without any adult supervision. She's 16 yrs old and not even allowed to go anywhere with friends without an adult present.

Will she figure out a way to convince her parents to see that she can be responsible?

God Supervision

“It’s just not fair!  What did I ever do to deserve this?”

La Kendra laid on her bed with her face buried in her pillow.  So much hurt, so much pain.  Why couldn’t her parents understand her?  She just wanted to be a typical teenager.  All she ever wanted was to hang out with her friends, but wasn’t allowed to without adult supervisor.  So mainly she would only get to be with her friends during church functions.  She was never allowed to hang out with them at the mall, the movies or anywhere else without at least one adult there.

She wanted to go to school dances and parties, but her parents forbid her from them because they were afraid something might happen.  Like someone pressuring her into doing something she would probably regret later.

She wasn’t allowed to go out on dates, unless, of course, there were an ADULT present.  But her parents promised her that when she turned 18, she would be free to make her own decisions.  They thought that was the right age where she would be responsible enough to do what she knew was right on her own.

La Kendra finally unburied her face from her pillow.  Her tears had left a puddle almost the size of her head.

“Think my parents are taking this religious thing way too seriously.  I’m sure that God would want me to go out and have some fun, right?”

She soon got up out of bed and got down on her hands and knees.

She prayed, “Dear God, will you please do something to help my parents understand that I NEED to have fun?  I’m 16yrs old and I…”  She was interrupted by a tap on her window.  She was frightened until she heard a familiar voice.

“Oh, my gosh, Donnie!”  She rushed over to the window.

Donnie of course was her secretive boyfriend.  They had been seeing each other for a couple months.  She knew if her parents knew about him, they’d be wanting to invite him over to dinner, sit with them at church, etc, etc!  They would never have any time alone at that rate.

La Kendra always wished that her parents were like Donnie’s.  As long as they knew where he was at in case they needed to reach him, he was allowed to do the normal teenage things.  But nothing illegal was allowed of course.

She pulled her curtain halfway open and saw her boyfriend sitting on the tree branch that led to her window.  He smiled and waved at her.

She opened her window and said, “Donnie, what are you doing here?  If my parents catch you I’ll be dead.”

“Don’t worry baby, I won’t let that happen.”

He reached his hand out to her.

“C’mon, let’s get outta here.”

She was now confused.

“What?? Are you saying you want me to sneak out?”

“Just for a little while.  I mean, don’t you think it would be nice to spend more time together?  We only get to see each other at school and with summer vacation coming up it would really suck to not be able to be with you for three months.”

“Yeah, that’s true .”

“Now c’mon, let’s go.”

She took his hand.

Donnie and La Kendra drove around for about an hour or so until they decided to go for a moonlight walk at King Hill Park.

Hand in hand they walked around the whole park.  When they walked up to the top of the hill, they spotted a bench.  So they decided to stop and rest for a while.

“Never knew that it could be so beautiful up here at night.  And I’ve never been up on this hill before.  Very nice view of the city.”

“Yep.  Are you glad that you came here with me?  It’s so nice being able to sit so close to each other.”  He pulled her closer and she rested her head on his shoulder.

La Kendra suddenly got this gut feeling that he probably wanted to kiss her.  She wanted that too, but was afraid that she’d do it wrong due to the fact that she has never been kissed.  At school, he’d always kiss her on the check before first period.  She always wanted more than just a peck on the cheek, but was afraid to in front of everyone because she thought something would go wrong.

“Yes, I am very glad.  I love being here with you Donnie.  Wish I could stay here with you forever.  I love you.”

* Oh my, did I just say that??”*   La Kendra had never been in love with anyone before.  She couldn’t believe that she just said that.  She did have crushes on a couple of boys before, but she had never felt the way about anyone else as she did about Donnie.  Her heart was pounding like crazy because she didn’t know what Donnie would say.

“La Kendra…”

She moved her head from his shoulder.  They looked into each others eyes.

*So I didn’t scare him after all.  Wow, he looks so gorgeous with that star gaze look in his eyes*

They leaned forward.

*Wow… This is so nice.*

La Kendra felt a feeling inside that she had never felt before.  And she was sure that Donnie had that same feeling.

After they pulled apart, Donnie gently touched her face and said,

“I love you too.”

“I hate good byes, but it’s late.  So I guess I better get inside before my parents find out that I was gone.”

They were parked around the corner so that La Kendra’s parents wouldn’t see them.  She really hated keeping her relationship with Donnie a secret, but she had no choice.

“I’ll stay here till you’re in your room.”

They kissed each other good night.

After they let go, La Kendra got out of the vehicle.

“Hey,” Donnie said just as she was about to close the door.

Donnie smiled and said, “I love you.”

La Kendra giggled.

“Love you too.”  She closed the door and walked off.

*What a beautiful night.  We most definitely will be doing more of this during the summer, even though I will have to continue sneaking out,* La Kendra thought as she climbed through her window.

When she turned to see if Donnie was still parked around the corner, she heard someone flick her light switch.  She quickly turned and saw her parents standing in her doorway with their arms crossed.  The looks on their faces scared her so much that she couldn’t even move.

Her mom said, “Young lady, where have you been?  We were worried sick!”

“You have a lot of explaining to do,” her dad said.

“But mom, dad, I...”

“But we won’t get into this tonight, it’s late.  First thing in the morning, your mom and I will call up Pastor Lon and set up an appointment with you.  We’ll have him talk with you one on one first, and then we will all talk together about why you did what you did tonight.”

*That’s it… I can’t take this anymore!* La Kendra felt so much anger inside.

“What?? Why do you guys treat me like I’m a criminal!  It’s like a prison here sometimes! I can’t…

Her mom interrupted, “Don’t you use that tone with us young lady.  Now…”

La Kendra stomped her foot and shouted, “SHUT UP!”

Her parents looked as if they had just seen a ghost.

“I’m so sick n’ tired of you two not letting me have fun like normal teenagers!  You’ve been treating me this way the last three years and I’m not taking this anymore!”

She turned and started to climb out the window.

When she reached the branch, she felt a hand pulling on her arm.

“Stop this La Kendra,” her dad said.

“You get back in here right now!”

She managed to pull away.

La Kendra jumped off the branch.  Amazingly she landed right on her feet without stumbling over.

“La Kendra!”  Her parents called.

La Kendra ran as fast as she could.  She wasn’t sure where she was going, she just wanted to get away.

“I should be safe here.”

La Kendra was sitting on the front steps of her family’s church.  She couldn’t believe she talked to her parents the way she did.  She had never acted that way towards her parents before.  She was so afraid to go back home because of what she had done.  All she ever wanted was for her parents to understand her.

She bowed her head and put her hands over her face.  She felt like crying her eyes out, but never once shed a tear.

Then she suddenly felt a weird feeling.  She started to feel like she was floating on air.  She uncovered her face and saw that she was still just sitting on the steps.  She had no clue what was going on.  She was too upset to even try to figure it out.   After the feeling went away, she covered her face again.

Moments later a car pulls up in the parking lot.

*Oh no, must be my parents. Boy am I gonna get it now*

She never looked up because she thought for sure that her parents were out looking for her and finally found her.

“La Kendra?”

She could’ve sworn that she heard Donnie’s voice.  But she thought that her mind was playing tricks on her again.  She looked up anyway and saw him rushing over to her.

“Donnie!”  She quickly got up and ran to him.  They held each other so tight.

“Girl, your parents are worried about you.  C’mon, let’s go.”

She angrily pulled away from him and said,

“Are you crazy?? I don’t wanna go back!  My parents are such control freaks and you know that!”

Donnie said, “Listen… They know everything.  They know about us.”

La Kendra frowned.  “What?”

“They know.  I told them about everything.”

“But how did you…”

“After you ran off, they called up all of our friends.  But they contacted me first because they knew that you were out with me tonight.  And I had offered to ride around with them to look for you, but then I got to thinking that this would be the best time to tell them the truth about us.  So then I thought it would be better if I looked for you alone.”

“How’d you know I’d be here?”

“I asked God to help me find ya.  Looks like He led me here.”

Tear drops fell from La Kendra’s eyes.

Donnie hugged her and kissed her neck.

“C’mon baby, let’s go.  Everything will be alright, I promise.”

“It’s almost midnight, unfortunately!  Can’t wait till I’m 18.  ‘Cause there will be no more curfews!  Well not until I go off to college anyway.”

Donnie and La Kendra were at their usual spot at King Hill Park.  They loved to go there every Saturday night after their dates.

“Let’s make the last 25 minutes enjoyable by doing this.”

They leaned forward and started kissing.

It was so sweet that La Kendra’s parents had finally opened their eyes and realized how much being a normal teenager meant to her.  Their Pastor convinced them that La Kendra was a young adult and that they needed to start trusting her to make the right decisions.  Of course there was gonna be some times when she would get tempted, but as long as she had God, everything would be A okay!

Her parents had made some mistakes in their past and was afraid La Kendra might follow in their footsteps.  So they thought adult supervision was best for her.  But not anymore!  God had everything under control.

Technically though, she still was supervised by an adult.  She didn’t mind being watched over by Him because He is our, Creator, Father, Counselor, and Savior.

That feeling she felt the night she ran off, she now knows that it was Him.  He was telling her that everything was gonna be alright, just like Donnie had said.

And whenever she looked up at the sky, she would smile and silently thank Him for keeping her in line.  She loved being supervised by her Heavenly Father!
