The Apple Tree

by Cecilia Belle Cole

There was an apple tree in Steven’s back yard.  He picked apples every summer.  This summer he went outside to pick apples.  He picked a lot of apples.  Then he went inside.  He had a snack.  Then he took a nap.

His friend Geoffrey came over for a play date.  They played with Steven’s race cars and picked fruit.  Then Geoffrey went home.

Steven said, “I like Geoffrey.  He’s nice.”

His Mommy said “Geoffrey likes you too.”

“Can he come over again?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Next Sunday.”

“Why Sunday?”

“We don’t have anything to do.”

On Sunday Geoffrey and Steven tried to pick fruit.  There was no more fruit.

“Well, we have other fruit trees.”

“Apples are my favorite fruit.  I hate all of our other fruit.”

“No you don’t.”

“Yes I do.”

“Why?”

“It tastes bad.”

“Why?”

“Because all we have is berries, and I hate berries.”

“Why?”

“’Cause they taste bad.  They’re terrible.  I only like strawberries.  And apples.”

Geoffrey was getting bored.  So he went home.

That day there grew an apple tree.  Steven didn’t see it.

The next day he saw it.  He loved its apples.  So did Geoffrey.

The End
