On the birthday of a parrot

By Humayun Kabir Dhali

Its name is Mithu. It is the pet parrot of the little girl Atashi. Her father bought Mithu as a gift on her birthday in the last year. Mithu looks very beautiful. It has green wings and blood red lips. Atashi likes Mithu very much.

Last year Mithu was very little. Its wings did not grow very well. Mithu has grown very well in a year. Bit by bit it is flapping its wings. Only is it? That's not all. By this time Mithu has learnt to talk a little bit. Hearing Mithu's word, Atashi gets fun very much. Mithu has become very intimate with Atashi. Atashi I call the Parrot 'Mithubhaia' with love. Mithu likes Atashi  as well. Within a year Mithu has understood that nobody is native of Mithu in the world without Atashi. So when it gets hungry, it starts calling Atashi saying O-shi, O-shi. Atashi gives banana, pepper, Averrhoa 0.Carambola to Mithu for eating. Mithu takes half and throws rest of them. For this reason, Atashi sometimes becomes angry. She says to Mithu angrily, 'O Mithubhaia, what kind of Zaminder you are that you eat half and throw half'. If you throw everyday, then everyone will dislike you. Mithu looks at Atashi with love. Mithu plays a somersault shouting 'Jo-Jo'

Since morning Mithu has learnt a new word. Getting up from the bed Atashi heard the new word in time of giving paddy to Mithu. Just seeing Atashi, Mithu has said, 'Oshi good, Oshi good'.

Everyone at home is happy as Mithu has learnt new word. The father of Atashi had brought a dozen of banana for Mithu. From that dozen of banana Atashi has given a banana to Mithu for eating. The habit of Mithu is to eat half and keep rest of them. That part of the banana is eaten at random by some black ants.

Tomorrow is the birthday of Mithu. That is, it will be one year of the arrival of Mithu at this house. Atashi hopes that she will celebrate the birthday of Mithu. The friends will be invited. So she has written the cards by herself.

The writings are:

Dear friends,

Tomorrow is the birthday of my dear bird parrot Mithubhaia. You must join the birthday party of Mithu.... Atashi.

Atashi is decorating the cage on the occasion of birthday of Mithu. In time of decoration they are reciting the verses:

On the birthday of Mithu

Sweetmeat will be brought

Friends will be present today

All will make fun.

The birthday of Mithu will be after the daybreak. But the night of Atashi does not pass by any means. When the night does pass, it will be well enough to pass the birthday of Mithubhaia. It is confirmed that father has brought the cake. To cook meat-Palau is the mother's duty. therefore, there will not be problem. Thinking over this sort of thing Atashi falls asleep. In the state of sleep Atashi imagines that Mithu has come out from the cage. It has sat by the side of Atashi's head. Atashi gets surprised looking at Mithu. She said, 'what happened to Mithubhaia, who has let you go out'.

Mithu answers, 'Nobody, you unconsciously kept the doors of cage open."

Atashi says, 'O! Now it's okay, enter into the cage!

Mithu says, 'O-shi, let me be free? I do not feel comfort being in the cage. Please, make me free.

Atashi says, 'What do you mean by this? you are already free.' If you do not feel comfort in the cage, you can stay outside. You will live in the open house with us. You will play with us.

Mithu says, 'House itself is a cage for me. The iron cage is small. The house is little bit big, nothing else.'

Atashi says, 'where do you like to stay'? Mithu answers, 'I want to live outside the house. The open sky, the forest land, trees are my suitable places. It is very hard to me to live in the cage in this way. It is a long time that I don't meet my parents. I badly deserve to meet my parents. Atashi becomes disheartened hearing Mithu's word. She looks at Mithu with a painful expression. At one stage she says, "Mithubhaia, you just leave now. Now I do not feel anything good. Just saying this, Atashi lies turning her face to another side. Next morning Atashi becomes busy with the arrangement of Mithu's birthday. Evening is coming bit by bit. The friends of Atashi are coming. Different kinds of gifts of birthday are in the hand of everyone. Everything is for Atashi. Looking at the gifts, it seems that the birthday is of Atashi, not of Mithu. Actually nobody decided to present what kind of gift should be for Mithu. So everyone has brought gift for Atashi in lieu of Mithu.

After a while the arrangement of cutting cake will be started. Before cutting cake Mithu with the cage was kept on the table. Six O'clock in the evening has been decided to cut the cake. All are looking at the watch for six O'clock. Still it is four minutes to six. Some friends are pinching Mithu. Some are saying, 'how are you feeling, Mithubhaia?' Sometimes Mithu becomes angry, sometimes he keeps an asking expression on the friends with his affectionate eyes.

At one stage Anika, the elder sister of Atashi, tells, 'It is six O'clock why you are not cutting the cake.'

Yeah! the writing on the cake is 'Happy birthday to Mithu'. The friends of Atashi are singing.... 'Happy birthday to Mithu.'

The cake has been cut. Everyone congratulate is Mithu giving their hands. At one stage, stopping clapping of the friends, Atashi says, 'You listen to me'. Though you celebrated the birthday of Mithu, nobody brought gift for Mithu. All have brought gifts for me. For this reason, I was shocked to some extent. I have understood that you do not love Mithu. But I love Mithu. So if you do not gift anything to Mithu, I will gift something to Mithu. 'Yes, right now everyone will see what kind of gift I will give Mithu. Last night Mithubhaia wanted the birthday gift from me. Since last night I had been thinking what kind of gift I could give him. last night Mithubhaia also told me that he felt uncomfortable living in the cage. It will be- Mithu was born in the forest land. Why does he feel comfort in the closed cage? Will we be able to live in the jungle leaving our home, parents and brothers-sisters? Shall we be able to live in the river? We will not do so. Something happens to Mithubhaia. So today I have decided to make Mithubhaia free on the occasion of his birthday. And this will be the gift of mine for Mithubhaia on his birthday. Opening the door of the cage Atashi takes Mithu in her hands. Then she goes forward to the window. She leaves Mithu extending her hands through the window.

being free from imprisoned life Mithu flies in the sky. And on his going he says, 'O-shi-va-lo, O-shi-va-lo.'
