“it is god I search for in the vast silence of the desert, in the hot and empty hills that ring the desolate sands in the weary rocks heavy with time I will find god”

The road uncoiled before me like a dusty white snake disappearing in a shimmer of heat haze. Sometimes at night when my bread is done and I sit in the cool darkness, stars so bright they shed their own light and the moon is a thin wafer high in the sky, the long road glimmers like a stray beam leaking out from a misty lamp. I sometimes wonder then if I will find what I am looking for only, I’ve been on the road so long I don’t think I can remember what exactly it is I seek.
My journey began a long time ago when the fire inside burned as bright as a single star in the dark night. They all said I was mad to travel the desert road. “You are too young” they said, “you will be alone” they said “you will hunger and thirst, you will die alone and forgotten out on the burning sands” they said “you are mad, hot fevers consume your soul.”
“I will find god” I said “it is god I search for in the vast silence of the desert, in the hot and empty hills that ring the desolate sands in the weary rocks heavy with time I will find god” I told the lined faces and all the tired voices, “I will find god,” I said “and we shall sit for a while and talk of heaven and all the golden horses in the sun and he will reveal to me where Michael and Gabriel might be found.” And all the bright tears of the rain will wash away my fear and in the light of god’s eye I will know I am home and all the tired voices in all the lined faces who said a burning fever consumed my soul will not laugh when I return and say I spoke with god, I know where Michael and Gabriel live but I can’t remember what exactly I am looking for. I was young then I am old now. I walk the long road and listen to the wind. I see god in the sun, in the rocks and the sand, god is within wherever I go, my life is a song in the melody god sings the universe to be; high in the mountain down in the valley, out in the desert or sitting by the sea. Take me as I am – or ignore me.
