The underground caverns in Mexico wove stories in my imagination that developed into my poem “Whispers Underground” which is not intended in any way as a reflection of the Mayan Culture. I was born on a Caribbean island with a history of cannibalism among the native Carib Indians of the region. Therefore, I am no stranger to the dark side of humanity perpetrated throughout time and cultures. Standing amid the beauty of those caverns with savage images flowing through my mind, I thought of watching or reading the news being currently reported in our world today, and sadness descended. We may be technologically and scientifically advanced, but have we (humanity) savagely regressed?
The dark face of humanity has changed countenance and it is no longer buried underground, it stares at us each day above-ground.

Whispers Underground

The fingers of time reach down,

teeth bared in a grimacing frown

to gnash at the caverns beneath town.

The womb of ancient civilization

breeding the follies of human concentration

birth water washing the blood of degradation.

See the stories that they tell

carved by the drip of seeping wells,

sinewy whips binding the tales

of souls lost and bodies impaled.

The vicious face of humanity hidden in the dark

shadows the evil of sins gruesome spark,

and all the while it’s mocking me

for beauty shrouds its cruel carnality.

Of many Gods and failing fallacies,

secrets of sacrifice and man’s atrocities

covered by the mounds of rocky ground,

reaching through time in silent sound.

The bowels of earth digest the good and bad

rumbling of denizens who denied the true God.

The wind above sighs of redemption

seeking to pierce the cavern’s abominations

through the prison bars of hell

stalagmites and stalactites containing cells.

I faced the dark side of me bound in the caves,

one of two destinies beyond the grave,

and as I stood I whispered a prayer

for those alive building similar empires.
