(Potentially) Perfect Prayers with Picture Prayers
Whenever I heard the word “Pray” in the past, it felt like this dry “I’ll get to it later or when I REALLY need it” sort of thing. I didn’t think of it as this element in my life that was an absolute necessity. Instead, it was a part of my routine, that “thing” I did before I let my exhausted body drift off to sleep every night.
I wasn’t formal about it either, I didn’t get on my knees and fold my hands together and squint my eyes closed—besides my knees are WAY too boney to handle that position anyhow. Instead, I would literally lay in bed first and then mumble off some rehearsed stuff I’d conjured up mostly on my own and top it off with what I was taught to say, “In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
That is, I’d top off my prayer with that if my own boredom with my rehashed prayer didn’t send me off to sleep before I finished it!
I don’t think I’m unique to say that I felt inadequate with my prayers for a major chunk of my life:
A. I didn’t like what I said in my prayers,
B. I didn’t feel I got everything in that really was on my mind throughout my day,
C. and I know I felt guilty for even asking for anything much when I knew there were MANY others in the world who had a ton more needs than I did!
Where was the contentment there was supposedly to be had in prayer?
Oh—to be a fly on the wall in the midst of other people’s prayer ramblings.
I still wonder till this day if others realize how being content with ones prayers is SO important. I mean really, if we don’t call a friend up on a somewhat consistent basis—wouldn’t that friend get the picture that you aren’t that interested in being good friends at least?
Now—would keeping in touch with God be any different? I’ll give you a moment to think that question over…

That was a quick answer to come up with wasn’t it? I’m hoping the answer, “Of course, Heidi. Duh!” Came to mind easily for you J
In the spirit of the Holidays approaching us all, I’m hoping people are taking the time to examine their connection with God on all levels. Much like how the New Year brings about new resolutions, it’s time that our souls get resolved to viewing our place with God. It shouldn’t be a once a year practice, of course, but it’s a start.
No one is perfect, so striving to be that in the eyes of anyone just isn’t going to happen and God knows this best since He’s made us to be flawed. But He also built us to be learning, growing, laughing, carefree, careless, fumbling, grumbling characters! With these and so many other enticing and despising elements, why not embrace them and explore the possibilities of building up the more positive aspects by first making the communication with God a priority!?
I don’t have all the answers and if anyone claims they do—run! But what I am hoping to help is put a fresh coat of paint on the topic of prayers. I once nearly dreaded the venture into prayers because it seemed so drawn out and lackluster until I was down to the wire and boom—I had the best prayer on my lips to sputter out to God in a heartbeat!
Would you believe that it took an angel to come my way to shed some light on my method and perception of prayer? Yes—I said an angel.
I was shown how THEY pray and communicate with God, something I’d never really considered. I mean, really, who would sit and ask that question: “Hey, angel, come here for a sec’ I have a question that I’ve been just dying to ask ya!”
It truly never crossed my mind.
It’s my hope that my writings and ramblings in my book Picture Prayers: The Journey to Picture Perfect Prayers truly touches upon the hearts and chords of prayers for all who glance upon it.
For me, Picture Prayers changed my life and brought me such contentment in my communication with God and even other people that I know (think, feel, hope, gander) it will inspire the same for others.
