Abby set her fork down and watched for a few seconds as Celeste moved the food around on her plate, but didn't taste any of it. "What's wrong?" she finally asked.
Celeste looked up from her plate and met Abby's eyes. "Nothing, I'm just a little tired."
Abby frowned. "No, I can see by the look in your eyes that it's more than being 'just a little tired'. You've been distracted all evening. Out with it."
Celeste swallowed hard. "Are you happy with me, Abby?"
Abby's eyes widened and then she softly laughed. "Well, of course I am. We've been together for ten years. Sometimes I think I know you better than I know myself." She continued looking at Celeste trying to read something in her expression, then alarm set in. Her heart caught in her throat. "Is this where you tell me you want out?" she asked trying to keep her voice under control but knowing it was impossible. She nervously twisted a strand of her long auburn hair.
"No…no, it's not that," Celeste quickly said. "I love you, Abby. I've never loved anyone the way I love you. Before I met you I never dreamed this kind of love was possible." She laughed hollowly. "Okay, now I sound like one of those matchmaker commercials on TV."
"Then what is it?" she asked as her heart slowly calmed down.
Celeste bit her bottom lip. "Our tenth year anniversary is coming up."
Abby smiled. "It doesn't seem like it's been ten years already. We should plan something special. Would you like to have a party or take a little vacation? It's been ages since we've been able to take time off from work and get away by ourselves."
"I know." Her forehead creased. I had something a little different in mind."
