The Underside of Ice
I was a self- discoverer of how to disarm from self-loathing:
I tread softly, in bare feet in quest of something I can never repeat.
Now I tip-toe over fractured ice, unsure of what I left behind –
Scared of what lies ahead. The eerie cracking lets me know I’m about to break through… I think back, how I was a fool for tempting God and some men;
Is this why I’m walking on thin ice?
It’s hard to tell just when and where I broke through, a hole somewhere upstream has my name etched by it, but I’ll never see it. There’s no turning back. There’s no escape from my watery grave, there’s no “oops,” I changed my mind. No way of finding the hole and climbing out… out where I can breathe again and just maybe start over… “Yes, yes help! I want to start over, somebody help, please!”
The sun is brazen in all its glory the way it glances across the lenses of hard chill river water, looking as if a red-hot fire has been lit over top of me. Maybe it will cut the ice like a laser and set me free!!
Suddenly, yes now! I see faces in angular proportion to the soles of cleated feet. Faces of people who can help me… but I also see anguish in those faces, I can even sense their fear as they desperately try to save me…bless their charitable little hearts, every one of them. As they can tell, I have been floating here for days now, for many miles. My skin has turned a wrinkled prune color as I lie here on the underside of ice, Alone.

Your story has some layers I'm trying to peel back. For example, you start with, "self-loathing." And then you're talking about, "tempting God and some men." But the eventual outcome of being underwater in cold water seems plausible, like those poor fellows that were given concrete shoes.

To sum it up, your story is short, but not so sweet… At least for the poor fellow with the ice problem.

A grim perspective, Bob, but a post-op of 'oops' worth reading and passing on to those in despair ... "Yes, yes, help!" Especially you traumatized GIs and groping young ... learn those three little words. There is no dishonor in them. "Yes, yes, help!"
