Children in grade 2 can analyze plot, setting, and character in this story about a desert toad.

Tory the Desert Toad

Tory was a desert toad. She lived all alone in the cool shade of two large rocks. There were no other toads living near her. Day after day, Tory wished for a friend. Day after day, she saw no other desert toads.

Tory slept in the shade in the day. Every night, she hopped down the hill to a swimming pool. As usual it was nice and quiet.

She climbed down to her favorite rock by the pool. She got ready to jump into the water. Suddenly a loud “croak” broke the warm desert night. Tory jumped right behind a cactus to hide. She wanted to see who made the noise.

Tory looked into the dark pool. She could see something swimming. The shape swam toward her. It hopped up on her favorite rock. Tory was scared!

Then the moon came out. She could see the shape on the rock. It was another toad just like her. Tory let out a croak. So did the new toad. Then Tory hopped over to meet her new friend.
