My father is someone I have never seen, known or known anything about for that matter. Over time I wondered about the other side of my family. In order to quiet the nagging need I seemed to have in regards to learning something about my biological father, I decided to use the Internet as my guide and see what I could dig up. Not willing to pay for information I started searching databases of records available to the public. I donít know if I should say Ďlucky for meí but within moments I was able to obtain a copy of my Ďfathersí rap sheet. I call it rap sheet because, boy has he been busy in law enforcement and never on the right side of the badge. Heís left a trail a mile long of women, children, divorces, and child support orders never complied with and numerous arrests for DUI and other acts of stupidity. I even located the names of some of my siblings also. I found I had an older brother, and guess what? He unfortunately conforms to the like father, like son mentality. Cross him off the list of those I must write to. Oh, and I was able to find a picture of him too! Iíll admit the department of corrections takes horrible photos, but I could see a slight physical resemblance.
The records I searched were county records, court databases, and recorders office data that, in some of the counties are free of charge to search. Because the information provided is public record it proves to be more cost effective to allow public searches than pay county employees. Some courts are allowing people to search records for information. Keep in mind, all these combined are only effective if the person youíre looking for has a record of some sort for any reason (marriage, divorce, arrest, traffic ticket etc.), or has had property in their name. This said, most people fall under one of these categories.
The search itself wasnít hard but the information I found was a tad hard to take. The emotional excitement one has at the potential to link up with one of the two people responsible for your existence is incredible. However, the emotional let down can be equally incredible when you discover this person is nothing close to what you may have imagined. I never expected him to be a saint by any means, but I expected more than a common criminal that took advantage of every situation that presented itself. While every story has two sides I cannot say the numerous arrests for drunk driving and the numerous children (myself included) he has failed to take responsibility for are merely unfortunate circumstance. These speak volumes to me and make me realize that I will be better off in the long run to leave long lost at just that. Long lost.
I am not pursuing a relationship with this man and I donít know that I ever intended to. I have enough information now to realize that I donít need or want one. I have concentrated my efforts to possibly connect with my other siblings if their mothers will allow me. I do believe that they, like myself had no choice in their father and am inquisitive to learn more about them. As far as the man of the hour is concerned, the law can have him (and judging by the past Iím sure they will).
HEREíS HOW I DID IT:
The County Courts, the Assessorís office, the County Treasurer, the DMV, and the County Recorder are all resources I used. Some, not all, allow free searches and the availability of this depends on that particular states law regarding public records. Documents that are recorded with the county recorder of any county, are available to anyone simply because they are public record. However, not all counties allow free searches and you may have to pay a nominal fee to obtain copies. Access to court records allowed me to trace the path of where my biological father had been. I then ran further searches with those county records as well. I was lucky in that most of the counties that I searched allowed me to run the searches myself and free of charge.
Searching for any person with the intention of stalking, harassing, or causing harm is not the intention of this article. If this is your intent I would suggest that you go out and get a life, take up a hobby, or join a bowling league. Life is too short for stupidity of that nature. And yes, behavior like that is just that, stupid.
